'Brooklyn' Is Now One Of The Most Popular Baby Names In The U.S.

NEW YORK (AP) - Maybe it's the ultimate sign that New York City's up-and-coming borough has finally arrived: 'Brooklyn' is now one of the nation's most popular baby names.

Over the past two decades, 'Brooklyn' as a name for girls has surged from No. 912 to the top 30 in each of the last three years.

Some credit soccer star David Beckham and his wife, Victoria, for naming their son Brooklyn. Some cite actress Brooklyn Decker. Others point to "Girls" and the other TV shows and movies that tap into the borough's gritty, cool vibe.

But one thing is clear: Of the 41 states where Brooklyn is now the most popular girl's name beginning with B, New York is not among them.

Real Brooklynites say naming your child 'Brooklyn' is strictly for out-of-towners.

Check out these famous people who share their names with places:

Born and raised in Brooklyn .............Hate to say but most of it is dirty. People are in 'clicks', distrustful, and pretty much stay with their own kind. There are many neighborhoods where many Brooklynites will not go. Loved it (didn't realize how awful it was, being in the middle of it), now so glad I got out. Would never name a child after such a low class city ...... sorry just my opinion ......

My friend was named Brooke Lynn - 58 years ago - way before the rage of the London - Brooklyn - Phoenix - and on and on. I have to laugh at the desperation some people have trying to insure their golden child has that different name - of course the so called celebrities are the worst when it comes to names - eg North West - Apple just to name a few - but the ordinary people of the world can and are as desperate. Then there are the ones ''discovering'' older names and going crazy with them... Just an idea - has anyone used a piece of furniture as a name - how about Chair or Armoire - the list goes on!

Leave it to New Yorkers for even their most ghetto of residents to be uppity.

Whatever happened to "normal" names like James or Marie? Now we have these stupid trendy names named after food, tv characters, or towns, though I did grow up with a girl named Florida (We called her Flo.). Guess it's really nothing new.

This is just another example of the antipathy towards western culture that has permeated American society. Let's hear it for little baby BRONX!!!
