'Super bananas' may save millions of lives in Africa

London, UK - A new project pioneered by Australian researchers plans to have "special banana varieties -- enriched with alpha and beta carotene which the body converts to vitamin A -- growing in Uganda by 2020," according to AFP.

The project is part of a larger initiative to use "good science" to potentially save the lives of millions of "poor and subsistence-farming populations with nutritionally rewarding food."

Researchers announced Monday that the bananas are now being sent to the United States. According to multiple sources, the six-week trial "measuring how well they lift vitamin A levels in humans" should begin soon.

"May save millions in Africa" so keep the bananas in Africa. When you start fooling around with mother nature she doesn't like it, they may kill millions in the long run, but then that's the plan right?

I can't wait to see how the radical left infuses the Tea Party into this. I can't wait to see how the radical right infuses Obama into this. I can't wait to hear how the organic community will shout foul at using genetically enhanced bananas. I can't wait to hear from those who will accuse the scientists of using poor Africans as guinea pigs to experiment on. Super bananas! I'm sure it's probably a great thing but it sure sounds funny...... so here is my funny thought:

I think they should set a small batch of these bananas aside to feed monkeys so we can see how fast they evolve into human beings.

Perhaps you are unaware that the yellow bananas you buy at your grocery store would not exist without human intervention. The bananas you love are a genetic mutation that is incapable of reproducing on their own. They would have ceased to exist long ago is humans had not "fooled Mother Nature" by keeping this aberation a live through cuttings. We breed all manner of vegatables to have hightened flavor, storage properties or new colors. Remember Luther Burbank and his Burbank Russet Potato. We cultivate grains with higher protein content to feed the starving and we already grow carrots with additional beta carotene to combat blindness in Africa. None of these new varieties would survive the pressures of evolution without humans interviening by deliberatly growing them.

Genetically modifying food crops and animals is not a good thing, it is not "good science" and in the end those people in Africa are human test subjects.

Lemme tell you a little about Africa. There is more prime agricultural land in Africa than anywhere on Earth. 99% of this African ag land has never been put to the plow.
There is also more fresh ag water in Africa than anywhere on Earth including the Congo river surrounded by the most fertile ag land there is - almost none of it has been cultivated. Giving them banana hybrids is not giong to do anything. They'll eat it - end of story.
They don't need hybrids, they don't need gold or diamonds, they don't need oil, they don't need money - they have hords of it.

So let me ask you this. What is it they DO need, seeing as you are such an expert?

What you say is true. What you say about Africans is true. They will eat them. They will not plow, grow, reproduce them. Oh maybe for 6 months under supervision, but in the end it goes back to the way it's always been. That's the African way. I had friends worked in the Peace Corp for years doing wells, water dams, irrigation, setting it all up saving hundreds of lives per village. By their second visits some 8 months later it was all gone. Back to zero. They don't think like westerners. They don't think in terms of "tomorrow" or "future". It's day by day.

Years ago my husband and I took a visitor to see the American History Museum in Washington, DC. He was very excited with the 19th century agriculture exhibit (pre mechanization). He said, "This is the kind of thing our villages need, things they can manufacuture themselves, not tractors that break down and then they don't know how to fix them." He was talking about mold board plows, animal drawn harrows, etc. Of course the big machine manufacturers won't get any AID or other money for these simpler kinds of teaching and development, so not much of that will get done.

We shouldnt have anything to do with this! Liberals tell us the world hates the US because we interfere in the affairs of other countries, so just dump the damn bananas in the trash and leave someone else worry about africans.

We need birth control since we can NEVER catch up to the over population occurring in Africa, middle east, Asia and south America. If we don't stop over producing then mother nature will do adult abortions and humanity will increase its wars every where. It is guaranteed.....bananas will prolong the problem, not solve it....wake up.

Genetics allow for several harvestable crop to be more productive Not sure why people complain when world hunger is an issue and still complain when something gets done

The research was done in Australia and London reported it, why not have them eat the crap. Now bananas are off my list of food. What was wrong with the natural banana? I stopped buying them after I noticed they tasted like well crap.
