Abandoned buildings from around the world

Strange Abandoned Buildings Around The World: That's Weird
Across the planet, there are locations and monuments left abandoned. Once time and corrosion have taken hold, entire towns are left in ghostly shells of their former selves.

Take for example Pripyat, Ukraine, site of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster of 1986. This once-bustling city of thousands was abandoned virtually overnight when one of the reactor cores malfunctioned. Residents were told to take only what was necessary and leave immediately. All that stands now is a wasteland of wreckage and ruins that create a snapshot in time. Large parts of the site are still off-limits due to radioactivity, but there is a small portion that has been sealed off for tourists.

The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was open from 1829 until 1971 and utilized a system of separate incarceration. Designed in the shape of a wagon wheel, the prison was home to notorious criminals such as Willie Sutton and Al Capone. The prison is now a museum and official historic site that is a monument to history with eerie imagery, abandoned barber shops and cavernous wrecked hallways.

The Ryugyong Hotel in North Korea is a construction project several decades in the making. Building began in 1987 and came to a halt in 1992 with the fall of the Soviet Union and a downturn in North Korea's economy. Standing at just over 1,000 feet tall, the hotel is the most visible object of Pyongyang's cityscape. Known also as 'the hotel of doom' and 'the phantom hotel,' it has stood largely vacant for decades with an uncertain path forward. Work on the hotel began again in 2008 and today the exterior is complete, but reports are that the interior is hollow, large and mostly incomplete.

The New South China Mall is a large mall in Dongguan, China that, since it's opening in 2005, has remained largely unoccupied. The 7.1 million square foot leasing space was built on farm land and is a haunting reminder of ambitious, albeit poorly planned, urban development, which is sadly the case in many parts of China.

Ghost towns across the world pique our imaginations and continue to be relics of an age gone by.

I agree with you! Liberal media doesn't report news that makes Obama Admin. look bad. If you want to learn the news you have to watch Fox. I read Aol for entertainment not for the news. AOL is fluffy, just like ABC, NBC and CBS. CNN, MSNBC etc don't even rise to fluffy!!!!!!!

They should have included all the cities which China has built capable of housing millions of people. Part of Agenda 21 I think which is where the United Nations, George Soros and Obama want to put the people. The US as well of course in what they call, in Agenda 21, "Sustainable Development".

Many in the media themselves will find themselves there someday, not realizing they helped make it happen. Along with the 800 or so Residential Centers/Fema camps with barbed ware fences

Aol as other news agencies are under orders not to report real news. They also want access to the new administration and would be locked out if they reported all the illegal stuff going on in the Obama administration.

But they are helpful by not critisizing Obama and this helps him in his transformation of this government into a Kingdom and King.

Soon Obama will be able to make all laws with his pen and not need any branches opf government except for his pen. You can see it happening before your eyes.

I find this fascinating and interesting. Your political BS, not so much. If the only interest you have is in your slanted view of politics, why did you view this story? Some of us are interested in a myriad of things not just one.

Too bad we have to hijack this thread, but since AOL/HuffPost don't have any stories on the missing IRS emails, this is the only way we can do it!

The city by Chernolbyl is never going to be inhabited again.

What we have in Chernobyl is part of the interior core of the reactor exploded and sent particles of the core, including fuel rods all over the land.

This is radioactive and deadly for millions of years and there is no way to reverse this.

The water table, food chain will be affected forever. It will eventually spread throughout the entire planet as rain soaks the land, the water table becomes radioactive and eventually reaches the sea. Also all radioactive water which evaporates and falls in other places as rain.

SAME holds true for FUKUSHIMA JAPAN. Three NUCLEAR MELTDOWNS, the nuclear cores have melted into the earth, the rain and ground water pass them by underground and then hundreds of tons of water each and every day which is radioactive pours into the Pacific Ocean.

But the entire area is also radioactive including cities. Too dangerous to live in but there is no place for the people to go.

Now these are the stories the AOL people should be reporting. A BLACKOUT EXISTS.

Everyone has to turn every article into a political stump. Why? There is more in this world than politics and your agenda. I'll be so happy to get the hell away from this country. You people make me want to throw up.

exactly. This obsession with working politics into every article is perverse. These folks really should get a life. Not everything is politics and there's no shortage of political articles to comment on. If you can't give it a rest, maybe you need to see your therapist.

Internet trolls are internet trolls are internet trolls.

Far be it for me to tell anyone what they should respond to , but....

IF you really are frustrated, perplexed, annoyed by the injection of politics into EVERY article that appears here, IF you really want to DO something about it.....

Don't respond. Don't respond. Don't respond. That's it. That's the BEST thing you can do---and also the ONLY thing you can do. They want your RESPONSE. That's all, that's it. NO insult you can hurl at them makes a difference. Your words are irrelevant----your RESPONSE is paramount.

Internet trolls are E X A C T L Y the same as a bunch of 12 year old boys at the food court in the mall that yell " hey stupid " when people walk by. IF you turn around, if you respond-----they got you. And that's ALL that matters to them. You RESPONDED.

WHY do you respond to 12 year old boys that yell " hey stupid" at you ?

What about the missing emails during the Bush administration over the U.S. Attorney
Agenda 21? Why don't you do some research on REX 84? Those are the camps that
were made ready for prisoners during the Reagan administration and have been maintained and added to ever since. Supposedly for illegal Mexicans. Why haven't they ever been used for that? Because that's not what they were really for.
Check out the executive orders that Reagan signed concerning this. Makes it easy and gives the government the right to declare martial law and confiscate everything at once including food sources, farms, personal vehicles, etc.
You people are naïve. It's nothing new and has always gone on by both sides.....no matter how much FauxNews tries to convince you otherwise.

Yeah, I still haven't gotten over Rosie O'Donnel cussing about how it was illegal for the president to "fire federal judges."

Whatever Bush did in office, he's gone. Why don't we solve our problems with Obama the same way? Get him out of there and into Hawaii as fast as possible. He shouldn't mind. He bought his retirement home there because it's much harder for illegal aliens and terrorists to get to Hawaii -- ditto food rioters.
