Egypt asks YouTube to take down graphic sexual assault video

Egypt Asks YouTube To Take Down Graphic Sexual Assault Video

After disturbing footage of a sexual assault in Egypt's Tahrir Square went viral on YouTube this week, the country is now asking the website to take the graphic video down.

Al Jazeera reports, "This video posted on social media, appears to show a woman naked with blood covering parts of her body. Police struggle to escort her out of Cairo's Tahrir Square."

The BBC reports a spokesperson for newly-elected President Abdul Fattah el-Sissi said in a statement Thursday the request to remove the blurry cell phone video came from the Egyptian embassy in Washington.

The spokesperson also said el-Sissi went to the hospital to visit the 19-year-old woman who was attacked in the video and apologize. It was then that she asked the president to have the footage taken down.

YouTube has removed copies of the video in which the woman can be identified. But the site is allowing versions with her face blurred out to remain online.

This attack and others that took place during recent celebrations for el-Sissi's inauguration have caused an uproar around the world and on Twitter.

Before the disturbing footage went viral, CNN reports Egypt approved a new law which makes sexual assault a crime - a first for the country.

The New York Times reports el-Sissi pledged during his campaign to "restore the sense of shame" that he says once prevented sexual assaults or harassment like this.

But critics are concerned the government won't be able to deliver.

The Guardian notes, when el-Sissi was a top army general, he supported the practice of forced virginity tests on female detainees.

According to a United Nations report from last year, 99.3 percent of Egyptian women said they have experienced some form of sexual harassment in their lifetime.

And the issue has worsened since the revolution that toppled long-time president Hosni Mubarak in 2011, with women being regularly assaulted during rallies in and around Tahrir Square.

But at least some action has been taken against the offenders in recent attacks. Al Arabiya reports police arrested seven men in connection with assaults which made headlines all week long.

As of early Saturday, Google, which owns YouTube, had yet to comment on Egypt's request to have the graphic video removed from the site.

I don't think they should take it down. it's a reminder of how women are treated throughout the world, even in this country, though many don't want to acknowlege it.

".... Egypt approved a new law which makes sexual assault a crime - a first for the country." The point is that this is a FIRST for the country. Egypt didn't have a law designating rape as a CRIME before 2014. Finally, they are beginning to step out of the Dark Ages and if it takes the use of social media to get it done, so be it.

It's not the religion at fault, it's the tribal mentality. We even have it in this country.

Should we also exterminate the men in the U.S. who rape women?? It matters not whether it's done in a public square or inside of a dwelling, parked car, in a bush, etc. It's still rape and it's still savage behavior. And it's not exclusive to the Muslim world.

Uhhhh, those muslim men came out of women. I ask what kind of influence did those muslim mothers have on their boys which caused them to grow up so twisted? Dads too?

muslim woman have no say - the men control the rearing of the boy child into a savage maniac like himself.. heck most little boys get the treatment from their elders first - another sick disgusting thing they do to children.. little boy is hungry and steals and apple.. they set his arm under the tire of a vehical and roll back and forth on it till it's maimed and broke.. some of them if they are older like 12 get their hands cut off.. wonderful society... little girls get genitilia mutilation to keep them from enjoying sex when they are older.. but it's done young as the sick bastards think they may go into puberty and want some type of pleasure.. So they mutilate them while the little 5 year old screams her heart out !! I hope and pray they all go to hell for what they do.. This is sharia and they want to bring it here.. Honor killing too.. Go find the DVD the Stoning of Soraya M - and all she went thru...

@tapdancer330: so you want women to be dressed with very less clothing exposing themselves(again which is a fashion of stone age),dating and having alcohol !!?? Incase of muslim countries About 90% of women are safe and secure having a peaceful, educated life which they desire and feel satisfied, unless they are invaded, raped and murdered brutally by NATO forces as done in Afghanistan and Iraq . The affected people are mostly provided justice by sharia or whatever law present in the concern Muslim country if the culprit is their citizen. My sincere recommendation is that you know nothing about true Islamic laws which cannot be taught in an american film adapted from french journal.Better you get your **** straight and keep your nose out of the Islamic law.

Leaders -- You can run but you can no longer hide. The people are armed (with video equipment) and will continue to expose you the world over. You have resisted change - for reasons of greed and power - far too long but change will be forced as the people continue to expose you and your cronies.

This whole thing about Muslim countries with their bearded clerics walking around and getting attention by their dress and through out the community they strain for gnats and swallow camels, oppressing people (women of course) for dress violations, What a piece of work. support the Women of these country's however you can that will bring a balance to the nation once Women have rights.

Her face should have been obscured from the beginning. They should keep showing it to shame Egypt and put pressure on Egypt to prosecute. Hard to believe rape was not a crime there until recently. I'm sure their religion forbids it, but old customs die hard.

Why does Egypt want it removed, I just watched what was going on . What a bunch of Cowards . Of course they want it taken down It Shows what kind of Animals the Muslim Arabs are. The Truth Hurts !!!! The need for them to be in America ( All the People from Arab Country's) don't belong in our country. There is enough on the rest of the video on to see how the country really is. Forget Food Drop..... huge trailers of SOAP, UNDER ARM DEODERENT , Tooth Paste and Brushes, Toilet Paper, No More Arabs and throw the ones here OUT !
