Is Miss Indiana's body really 'normal'...?

Miss Indiana Praised For 'Normal' Body, But How 'Normal' Is It?

Miss Indiana is being praised for competing in Miss USA with, what many are calling, a normal body. But just how normal is it?

The annual Miss USA pageant aired on Sunday night, and while Miss Nevada was crowned the winner, it's Indiana's Mekayla Diehl that has captured everyone's attention. Diehl was only on stage in a bikini and heels for 30 seconds, but it was enough time to get the attention of more than 10,000 twitter users.

One user tweeted, "Dear #missindiana thank you for looking like an average woman."

However, others feel the words "average" and "normal" might not be the most appropriate terms here. The LA Times published a story on Tuesday that provided the numbers to back that claim. They point out that Diehl is 5'8" and wears a size four, but according to the Center For Disease Control, the average sized woman in America is 5'3" and wears between a size 12 and 14.

Unfortunately, the US Department of Health and Human Services would classify the average American woman as borderline obese with those measurements. Miss Indiana, on the other hand, says she has a body mass index of 18, which is just shy of what the HHS considers a normal weight.

No matter what term is used to describe her, one thing is sure: the reaction shows American women love seeing someone with curves walking down the runway.
