Frenchman dead, another injured in Facebook dare

One Dead, Another Severely Injured After Accepting 'Cold Water Challenge'

PARIS (AP) - French police are warning young people about the dangers of a dare spreading on Facebook that has left a young man dead and another severely injured.

Police confirmed on Friday that a 19-year-old drowned a day earlier after driving his bicycle into a port in the western Brittany region while a friend filmed him. Another youth was injured for life after diving headfirst into shallow water near Calais in the north.

The challenge dares friends to jump fully clothed into icy water and film it - or offer dinner at a restaurant.

"Don't be influenced by a stupid phenomenon of the moment," national police warn on Facebook. A seemingly scarier dare over winter to chug alcohol killed no one in France.

When will all people learn that social media should not drive our lives. Even when someone dies, there are still many who will not believe it. They just take the place of those who do something stupid. It is sad that society has allowed social media to take the place of honest interaction with others, and in some places common sense and using out brains.

Not sure but think silk was implying that someone would care enough to grasp as straws and blame Obama. I am sure it was a joke since it didn't seem rational. Just guessing. People sure have Obama on their minds 24/7.

He is the sitting president, folks need to get over it. If I were the helm of the Republican Party, I would be looking for a very honest and qualified candidate that actually had skills and experience in economics and that understood the global political environment. We are at a cultural tipping point where it might not be possible to regain any sort of national personality; not saying that is good or bad. We were once viewed as the ideal place to come and live; we are now seen as a country divided with open borders to the south. Idealists want to embrace the entire Earth and feed and care for it (I would love that) but the hard fact is that someone has to pay for that. Borrowing more to give away is not the answer.

I am not quite sure how my brother (he is 72, I am 71) survived our childhood full of "dare's". Stuff (like this kid and his bike.... been there) that seems insane today seemed like a great idea in the 40s and 50s. Riding our bikes over the old Rail Road bridge (across the rapids) and then deciding it might be a good idea to just jump into the river; exploring old abandoned gold mines with only a candle (full of bats and other crittes). Taking our bike chains off and coasting down a hill to see who would chicken out first. My brother became a serious engineer and I became a psychologist. I am very sad to see this child perish but honestly can relate to what he was thinking.

silkroadg... really moron? You sit around just coming up with ways to balme Obama for your and others stupidity? You only show the true depth of your ignorance. If you had half a brain it would be a MIRACLE!!!!!

He (and others) are NOT the only ones - I have an aunt who'll always blame all of the evil things in life to "sippy 'rillas" ('rillas SHORT for gorillas).

The LIBTARDS are the ones who blame, Bush (still) GOP, Tea Party, Fox News, NRA and the rich, and everything and anything for their issues

Facebook now kills up to 1000 times more people than firearms.

Facebook should be renamed to "Horrorbook", as we hear almost daily reports of abuse, (such as bullying) and other forms of serious violations that devastate lives, so why you people out there are STILL bowing down before this Holy Grail Of Communication DEBAUCHERY, is beyond my comprehension ?!?!?
