Formerly conjoined twins are officially home

Formerly Conjoined Twins Officially Home

After spending nearly the full first year of their lives in a hospital and rehabilitation center, formerly conjoined twins in Texas are finally able to go home.

KXAS reports, "This is it. This is what we've been waiting for," says the twins' mother.

NBC reports that Owen and Emmett Ezell were conjoined at the stomach when they were born last summer. Surgeons were able to separate them in a nine-hour procedure just one month later, but that was only the beginning of a long recovery.

According to KXAS, the twins shared a liver and their intestines before being separated.

WFAA says the boys were in the hospital until April. That's when they were sent to a rehabilitation facility. The boys were also on feeding tubes and ventilators while they recovered. On CBS, the father says:

"We've received encouragement from all over the world, and it's phenomenal. It's really uplifted us up more than just about anything."

Now that the twins are finally home, the family wrote on its blog Thursday: "We are overjoyed. Overwhelmed. Exhausted. Full of love and hope. Worried. Relieved. Enamored."

The family says Owen and Emmett will reunite with their two older brothers when they return home from a visit to Arkansas.

Had to have a great surgical team. I understand Dr. Ben Carson was involved in separating conjoined twins back a few years. Sure hope he runs for Prez

so, how does this work? I understand the stomach, but one liver? Both needs a liver. How does this happen? Congrats on a great job, well done. I'm sure the parents are beyond happy!! MLT818

They each get half. It is really two livers that did not quiet separate same as the stomach .
