Puppy, cheetah cub at San Diego Zoo become best friends

Puppy, Cheetah Cub At San Diego Zoo Become Best Friends

When a young cheetah cub was without a buddy, zoo keepers in San Diego thought "man's best friend" could also befriend an oversized feline -- and they were right.

XETV reports the 6-week-old cub named Ruuxa is getting along very well with a Rhodesian Ridgeback puppy named Raina.

Cheetahs are usually born in litters of three to five, but Ruuxa was born alone. KNSD reports that this cheetah cub was abandoned by his mother and will have to be raised by humans at the zoo.

The zoo says that they love to play together and take naps together, noting that the dog has a calming effect for the cheetah.

The San Diego Zoo scheme to pair canine and feline might sound familiar because more than a year ago, the staff at Busch Gardens in Tampa Bay also paired a cheetah and a dog -- in that case, a yellow labrador.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, keepers found the two animals complement each other effectively, learning social cues and developing an understanding of the environment.

"They both have similar behavioral patterns. They find each other socially very similar in the way they interact with one another. So they have learned through a year's time now how a cheetah and a dog can establish a relationship just like any other animal," Attractions Magazine says.

It's cute story and a way to put a smile on our faces. Can we just leave politics out of it for one day? Cheez!

The only mistake made in evolution was to allow hairless apes over populate the planet to the point that they are now polluting the air, the water, the oceans and the land and causing the extinction of thousands of other species....eventually, the circle of life will close in on this mistake because the so called smartest species is actually quite dumb.....it does not learn from itself and allows its ego and mindless reproduction go on while believing that God created humanity as a special species.

Interesting observation, and I think, quite true. But how do we prevent this 'overpopulation', when ignorant cultures refuse to limit their reproduction?

But.. But... I thought there were no mistakes in evolution. So in your eyes man is a mistake of evolution? IF evolution is true THEN man has taken his proper place and might die out as many species have. Have mistakes been made? Yes but man still reigns as the smartest species that ever was. Man is quite adept at learning from mistakes and has limited mindless reproduction. Move to China bub. IF evolution is true THEN man might still solve his problems through technology. Other animals never will. The real problem is not overpopulation yet. There is plenty of food. The problem is getting it to the right place at the right time. Pollution problems have come from not knowing enough at the time, the greedy, and the stupid but can be overcome too. Energy problems can be solved too.

Science has proved many once crazy sounding things in The Bible and has never disproved anything to a 100% threshold. To discount God completely is the mark of a fool.

Just like a human---take it out of its wild environment and train it with someone who is tame and domesticated it is likely not going to be a predator. In this case---all I can say is how adorable they are together.

Who said it's no longer a predator? Are you just extrapolating on warm and fuzzy assumptions your poor little heart makes?

This kind of outcome is actually very common in baby mamals who are supposed to be born in a litter. The socialization period for puppies and kittens is similar, so they cuddle, play, get used to each other's scent and without a problem and bond and the constant proximity of each other does have a calming effect.
I just wish that more human kids were raised among baby mammals/ animals. There would be more animal lovers around and less animal abusers as you tend to "love what you know".

I think most people are in denial about animal capabilities. They are very loving and smart.

Years ago the San Diego Zoo had a similiar pair a Cheetah and a Golden Retriever named Anna and Arusha ! The loved each other , lived their lives with each other, and died within a short time of each other. They were a favorite sight at many Zoo functions. People loved to pet Arusha, and the keeper would remind everyone-pet Anna too!
