Arizona Woman, Has Nearly 50-Pound Tumor Removed From Abdomen

Woman Has Nearly 47-Pound Tumor Removed From Abdomen

TUCSON, Ariz., June 11 (Reuters) -- An Arizona woman was recovering at home on Wednesday after having a 47.5-pound (21.5 kg) tumor removed from her abdomen during life-saving surgery, doctors said.

The University of Arizona Medical Center surgeons worked for 10 hours to remove the massive liposarcoma, a cancer in the abdominal muscle, that had invaded Marcey DiCaro's inferior vena cava -- the body's largest vein. DiCaro stopped breathing and her heart stopped during the surgery.

"If the tumor had been let go, it would have killed me," DiCaro, of Tucson, said in a statement. "I'm happy to be going on walks and getting back in the pool and getting out and enjoying life."

In 2011, DiCaro noticed that her belly was getting bigger and she felt some transient pain, the hospital said. She had a scan In March 2012 that revealed a tumor but she lacked health insurance.

The hospital canceled surgery slated for 2013 because her insurance company would only pay for a small portion of the full costs, DiCaro said.

The hospital said DiCaro was able to get insurance that would cover pre-existing conditions this year because of a provision in the 2010 Affordable Care Act, President Barack Obama's signature healthcare reform law. She underwent surgery on April 17.

The tumor had also enveloped her kidney requiring removal during surgery, along with her gallbladder.

Obamocare is fine for those that had no insurance or pre-existing conditons, but for those of us that are healthy and had insurance before, its horrible. Now i have to not only make a higher premium payment, now I have to make payments to the healthcare provider because it doesnt cover anything before the crazy high deductible. Then we have to make sure we have the money to cover the full office visit because yet again the deductible is too high to cover anything. You people don't seem to get how this joke for insurance is causing people to go further and further into debt. For those to lazy to work or for those that eat only junk food or don't take care of themselves, its great, but why are we catering to people like this.

It's too bad hospitals would let a patient suffer or die for lack of insurance. She had to wait 3 years for the "life saving" surgery, which also took her kidney and gall bladder...and almost killed her because of the 10 hours it took to remove it all, when it would've been smaller and less risky 3 years ago...what a shame....

This story has a very happy ending - I am so happy for this woman, I am however so #$%%^&* pissed off with our health care system - thank God this woman didn't die before she got the proper insurance coverage - WTF kind of world do we live it where the ability for someone to live or die depends on the amount of money they have. Having just gone through a personal situation my heart goes out to this woman and all people in a similiar circumstance! How damn unfair I could rant on and on but what good would it do! I am sure there are millions and millions of others who feel as I do! Life is short - we should be able to at least have a half decent chance to survive and live a healthy life as long as we can!

This Country should be ashamed of health care, we are supposed to be the leading Country in the World for breakthrough's in the medical field. This poor woman had to put off having surgery because her health ins would only pay a little. The National Health in England may have some problems but it would never have let this woman go so long like they did in America. If it is life threatning like her's was they operate right away. America should be ashamed. I myself have been going through some medical problem's and I have health ins, but even with insurance the co-payments are killing us. When I got admitted to the hospital they wanted me to pay the full amount that the ins did not cover. They should be ashamed of themselves. I dont carry that kind of money around with me. I live on a fixed income and just cant pay up front for hospital, I have to pay so much a month and even that is hard.A lot needs to be done in America so people can get proper health care without the worry of money.

this is totally due to this woman's NEGLIGENCE on the part of her OWN HEALTH !!!

blaming it on in$urance is the "new norm" now ... wait till Obama(don't)care TURNS DOWN patients for whatever reason they "make up" !!!

you people think those VA deaths aren't a wake-up call on what is Obamacare's future?

Yeah, and if that Affordable Care Act that all the rich people like to complain about hadn't passed, then she would have.

Do you pay for your plan? If not stop your damned whining. And another user stated it WAS HER OWN FAULT. SURE SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS!

THAT's for sure - let's just SEE some of these RICH people shell out the MONEY for hospital stays and surgeries - THEN they'll sway toward WANTING to get Obamacare a REALITY for this country!

I wholeheartedly agree our Health System is a mess in this country - but one thing people keep confusing is Health Care with Health Insurance. We all have access to Health Care in this country. What we don't have is adequate Health Insurance and adequate means to pay for it. Without knowing the facts of this particular case, it seems the hospital put profits in front of the patient. When hospitals started becoming corporations is when we lost the ability to maintain affordable Health CARE!

Hospitals and insurance companies HAD to be no-profits in past, but in the 1980"s, under Ronald Reagan, they became free to be for profit corporations. Like so many other policies Reagan enacted, it was the beginning of the end for middle income people. Ronald Reagan was one of the worst and most dangerous presidents, to the American way of life and values, in our history. He was a man of the corporations, not the people.

Someone has to pay for the care, if not, the hospitals would close and there'd be no care. For years, insurance companies were allowed to gouge their customers with HUGE premiums, and then turn around and refuse to pay for life saving treatments when those people needed them. Thanks to the ACA, they can no longer do that. Why do you think the GOP/TP have tried to repeal the ACA 50 times...and continue to fight it?? They are trying to appease their corporate "masters!" They can't refuse to pay for "pre-existing" conditions like they have before, and they don't like it!

Eileen - you are exactly right.... Someone does have to pay for the care - but not the inflated rates they continuously charge! The insurance companies were out of control for far too long! Now that is ending and they are all crying poor... well, too bad!! But, the hospitals have a hand in this as well. As soon as they became corporate entities, profit margins became their priority. It will take some time but the ACA will work. We're all too young to remember when Medicare was enacted - it took several years to get it running smoothly but it eventually did - the ACA will succeed also, everyone just needs to give it time. And, for all the people saying their premiums doubled with their existing health coverage and then blame the ACA - it has nothing to do with the ACA! It has to do with these greedy insurance companies needing to keep hold of their ridiculously high profit margins! The media is the biggest culprit and they have to stop with the fear mongering and false propaganda!
