Actor Don Cheadle launches crowdfunding campaign for new film

Hulton Archive
Academy-Award nominated actor Don Cheadle is looking for your help!

The 49-year-old actor is taking matters into his own hands to fund his feature film, 'Miles Ahead', a film that tells the story of a few dangerous days in the life of music icon Miles Davis (played by Cheadle), as he bursts out of his silent period and conspires with a Rolling Stone writer to steal back his music.

On June 4th, Cheadle launched a crowdfunding campaign using Indiegogo, the world's largest global crowdfunding platform. Cheadle is seeking $325,000 in additional production funds, and is hoping this type of grassroots campaign not only raises money, but excitement for the film. So far, Cheadle has raised $135,000 and counting, well on his way to a goal of $325,000.

When asked in a press statement why he chose to utilize Indiegogo, Cheadle replied, "Most studios don't make these kinds of movies anymore, so we are doing it independently. I'm personally putting a big chunk of money into our budget as well as putting all my fees back in. But the extra money we hope to raise on Indiegogo will help us recreate the multiple time periods we're dealing with and with the logistics of incorporating all the music. We are excited to get people talking about the movie early, raise awareness, and set into motion the groundswell of support we hope will continue through to the film's release."

Cheadle is best known for his roles in Steven Soderbergh's 'Oceans Eleven' films, 'Iron Man 2 & 3', as well as his Academy Award-nominated performance as Best Actor in 2004's 'Hotel Rwanda'. He is currently starring in Showtime's 'House of Lies', as Marty Kaan, for which he won a Golden Globe in 2013.

This is ridiculous. Wealthy millionaires asking the public to finanance your movies. Ask JZ or Oprah for 200 grand. It's ridiculous. Don Cheadle has all these resources at his fingertips and he's beggin the public for money.

Sites like these and Kickstarter are suppossed to be for real struggling artists not greedy millionaires looking to exploit their fame for more money.

Give it a break and fianance your own movie.

Hey Don Cheadle is the one rattling off all these names like Jay Z. What Don Cheadle isn't tell you is how much back-end money he'll make off this film if it's successful. Money that the public who would help fund it, would never see.

The point is, it's absurd to go to the public begging for money when he can either fund 200 grand himself or ask one of his celebrity friends. He's simplly using his fame to exploit the public for money.

Again, these cites were designed for people that truly can't afford to launch their own projects. Not rich greedy celebrities looking for the public to fund their film so they can "line" their pockets down the road.

I hear your point. But don't necessarily think he's being *purposefully* exploitative. I also don't think another movie needs to be made to let ppl knw how great MD was - there are other unknown uncelebrated musicians from the past I think he could have focused on that others would have supported more willingly and who more ppl should know about.

Watch the video of Don people! He IS putting in his own money - and working for free as director, co-writer and actor! If you want to be a part of something cool - and you do GET something for your money - then check it out. You can donate $5! And yes, the people who put hundreds of thousands or millions will get money back IF this movie makes money - but remember, small independent movies like this almost never make enough money for anyone to get their money back let alone get rich!

You must work for Don Cheadle so quit the charade. Cheadle is wealthy and has significiant back end points. If the film is a success he get's rich and these poor investors get nothing...

Quit being greedy. The site is for legitimate people that need funding. Not selfish, greedy, money-grubbing actors using theif fame to exploit the poor...

Go ask Jay Z, Oprah,or a studio for the money. Stop trying to fleece the public to make your greedy boss rich.

KEEP IT ALL JAZZ, BEBOP, BLUES, and FUSION. Dont forsake fusion for hip hop just because its socially acceptable. Whats popular isn't always good. Use cats that can blow, not imposters.

Cheadle is a great actor, and his films have earned millions for his investors, and he has many more years in the business. Every leading actor thast made it big, did exactly the same thing. Rarely have films been funded by the leading actors, and he is a wonderful actor, who deserves to make money from his films as well as the finance companies or
other investors. Did Gable, Hudson or Cooper fund their own films??????? No! studios did!!!!
