Dave Chappelle: 'I never quit. I'm 7 years late'

NEW YORK (AP) -- Dave Chappelle says he never quit his Comedy Central show. He's just seven years late to work.

Chappelle appeared on "The Late Show With David Letterman" on Tuesday night, his first late-night appearance in more than six years. Chappelle has kept a mostly low-profile since abruptly exiting "Chappelle's Show" in 2005.

Said Chappelle: "Technically, I never quit. I'm seven years late for work."

The 40-year-old comic next week begins a string of stand-up performances at Radio City Music Hall. Chappelle announced on Letterman that the rapper Nas will join him for his June 23 show.

The comedian acknowledged he sometimes misses the lucrative payoff of his Comedy Central contract.

He says "the only difference between having $10 million and $50 million is an astounding $40 million."

Comedic genius! Dave was equivalent to an athlete in the way he made others around him better. I mean, until that show I had no idea Charlie Murphy, Donnell Rowlins, or Paul Mooney were funny. Bring the show back!!!!

Dave still has it. I actually miss the Chappelle Show. That was funny comedy that crossed racial barriers and all. To borrow something I heard Charles Barkley say, Dave knew the difference between "race and racism." There is a difference people. We just have to embrace our differences and there it will be...nothing but race.

I used to see Dave when he was a street performer in Washington Square Park - once told me - "man you're the kinda white dude I love" because I put a $5 in his hat instead of a $1 like everyone else. The truth be told - I didn't have any $1 on me or that's what I would have gave him and I was on the spot to give him something because I was on a date - and he was pretty funny.

He is one of those comic geniuses that comes around once in a while, hated to see him go so early in the game.
