E3 2014: PS4 goes next level
E3 2014 is always a competitive time for the big console makers, but Sony came prepared with a strong showing of games for the Playstation 4.
Their press event kicked off with a deeper look at Destiny than we've ever seen before. Images of astronauts on Mars were accompanied by a voiceover that told of an alien force that would eventually come to destroy the world, and you're now its only hope. No pressure.
Destiny served as just an appetizer for almost two hours of gameplay trailers and demos, including first looks at games like Entwined (now available on Playstation Network for $9.99), Bloodborne (think of it like a horror-filled Dark Souls), and Mortal Kombat X (yup, it's violent). And it wouldn't be a Sony press conference without a look at a new Metal Gear Solid game, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain (it looks absolutely stunning).
Games weren't the only thing on the menu, as Sony also announced the US-launch of Playstation TV this fall, a $99 set-top box that can stream gameplay from your PS4 to any TV in your house, as well as access a streaming library of Playstation games from previous years.
Announcements like Grand Theft Auto V coming to PS4 (and Xbox One and PC) were expected, but Sony saved a surprise for the very end as the huge screen displayed a close-up of Nathan Drake, giving us a first look at Uncharted 4. While we don't expect the game to arrive on PS4 until 2015, it is clear that Sony is intent on staying on top of the next-generation mountain for awhile to come.
