Judge: Casey Kasem should be fed, hydrated

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A judge ruled Monday that Casey Kasem should be fed, hydrated and medicated while a court-appointed attorney evaluates the health of the ailing radio personality after his daughter moved to implement end of life measures.

Kasem, who has dementia, was in critical condition in a Washington hospital.

His daughter Kerri Kasem, who has been placed in temporary control of his treatment, consulted with doctors and decided in recent days to stop giving her father food, water and medications, attorneys said in court.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Daniel S. Murphy ruled that Casey Kasem should receive the treatments while an attorney appointed by the judge meets with Kasem and his doctors in Washington state.

Kerri Kasem's attorney Troy Martin said the decision to begin end-of-life measures was made after doctors determined that feeding and hydrating the celebrity had become increasingly painful. Martin said the judge's ruling is likely to cause the former "American Top 40" host more pain.

Casey Kasem's wife of 34 years, Jean Kasem, appeared in court and said she supported Murphy's ruling and will ask to be restored as her husband's caretaker.

"Only God knows when to take someone," she said.

She lashed out at Kerri Kasem and judges who have found Jean Kasem in contempt for refusing to cooperate with her stepdaughter, who was named Casey Kasem's temporary conservator last month after he was moved to Washington state.

Jean and Kerri Kasem have been fighting in courts in Washington state and Los Angeles over his care.

Murphy scheduled a hearing for Friday to receive an update about Kasem's health. Jean Kasem's attorney, Steve Haney, said it was unclear how much longer Kasem had to live.

Despite the family acrimony, Murphy said Kerri and Jean Kasem seemed to be doing what was best for Casey Kasem.

"It appears to the court that all parties have the best interest of Mr. Kasem at heart," the judge said.

Kasem gained fame with his radio music countdown shows, "American Top 40" and "Casey's Top 40." He also was the voice of Shaggy in the cartoon "Scooby Doo."

She wants his money and is not willing to wait until God takes him. She is willing to starve him and deny him water to hurry the process. An ungrateful, unfeeling, selfish child. Poor Casey. He deserves better than this.

If he were under hospice care, he would be given medication for the pain and they would be hydrating and feeding him. There really is no reason feeding and hydrating would cause the pain and under hospice care he would be getting the correct treatment!

This emphasizes the importance of every person having an Advance Healthcare Directing, with a Power of Attorney for healthcare. That way a person's own wishes can be carried out, and no hassling between family members about how to handle end-of-life issues. The doctors and hospital will also follow the instructions. Just file a copy of your directive with your own doctor, and the hospital where (s)he works.

Does his daughter realize how incredibly painful Dehydration and Starvation is? If she does, then I AGREE, she is Selfish and absolutely Uncaring. And his pain medication isn't prolonging his life, it is absolutely making it BEARABLE though. Let his wife take care of him, SHE OBVIOUSLY, LOVES and CARES ABOUT HIM!!!! God Bless You Jean and Casey.

I hope the decision that is made is for the best interest of the patient. I had that horrible situation happen to someone I love that I was taking care of. There was no monetary bonus for me. For me, prolonging his life would have been selfish, it would have been for me. But if you truly love that person you really must let them go, to rest in peace. I never doubted my decision as I knew it was the right thing to do, It's hard to say Good-bye

Jean Kasem should read the book: Knocking On Heaven's Door: The Path to a Better Way of Death by Katy Butler. Maybe the judge should read it too.

As a hospice nurse, I can say his daughter was making the best decision for her father. Usually in these cases, the medications being stopped are meds that will prolong life. Any medications providing comfort WILL be given. He WILL be kept comfortable. Artifically feeding and hydrating someone at the end of life if painful and miserable. The heart and lungs can no longer circulate the fluids which results in painful swelling as well as lungs filling up with fluids. As for the person who commented that taking away these interventions is not "letting God decide". I can tell you as a nurse AND more importantly, as a Christian, God has designed the body perfectly, and it has gone through the natural dying process for thousands of years. It only became drawn out and painful when MAN interfered and began trying to prolong life and live past God's time!
