Deejay Casey Kasem in critical condition at Washington state hospital

(Reuters) - Radio personality Casey Kasem, who is at the center of a legal battle between family members over his care, was in critical condition at a Washington state hospital with an infected bed sore, a hospital spokesman said.

Kasem, 82, was brought to the emergency room at St Anthony Hospital in Gig Harbor, Washington, on Sunday suffering from the infection and was admitted that day, hospital spokesman Scott Thompson said in a written statement.

Hospital: Casey Kasem Is In Critical Condition

"Mr. Kasem is receiving wound care, intravenous antibiotic therapy, blood pressure support medication as well as treatment for his pain," Thompson said. "Mr. Kasem is alert, appears comfortable at this time."

Thompson said the hospital was releasing details about Kasem's condition to counter what he called "misinformation" that had been published in the media. He did not elaborate on that misinformation.

Danny Deraney, a spokesman for Kasem's three children from his first marriage, said that the deejay's daughters, Kerri and Julie, were at their father's side and that his son, Mike, was en route to Washington.

Kasem, most famous for his weekly top 40 countdown radio show and as the voice of Shaggy on the "Scooby-Doo" cartoons, suffers from Lewy body disease, a form of dementia with symptoms similar to Parkinson's disease and hallucinations.

Kasem's children from a first marriage and his wife, Jean Kasem, have been locked in a legal tussle over his care and visitation rights.

Las week a judge ordered that Kerri Kasem be granted daily visits with the ailing radio personality during that legal battle, which escalated earlier in May when she and her sister filed court papers saying that they didn't know his whereabouts.

Several days later, sheriff's deputies in Kitsap County located him and Jean Kasem there. Further proceedings in the case are scheduled for late June.

Casey provided many good memories in the teen age years of the loyal fans who listened to his radio shows. Casey doesn't deserve to be mis-treated by his monstrous wife who has kept this fine man from his own children. Casey's kids have always been in their father's life and have wanted only for his health and safety. When will society realize that women are often the perpetrators in physical and mental abuse cases. Jean is a money-grubbing gold digger.

It's a good thing the daughters and the court stepped in when they did, I am wishing the best for Mr. Kasem.

...And now for a long distance dedication. I do not remember a more iconic voice on the radio than Casey Kasem. Wishing you well Mr. Kasem on the rest of your journey in this difficult situation.

I fully agree with you Peter, Kasey Kasem was the most welcomed and iconic voice for us on the US armed forces radio network in the 1960/70's and I think everyone in the military recognized his distinctive voice. Thanks for the memories Kasey and our prayers go out to you.

Bed sores come from one cause: neglect. Apparently his wife is his primary caregiver, & if he is getting bedsores, infections & other illnesses, she can't handle his care. His daughter got primary custody of him & sent him to the hospital because he is so sick. It's all about money: His wife is accusing his daughter of wanting to donate all of his money to The Church of Scientology. So, his wife was trying to hide him from the children until he died, in which case she would take all of his money & go into hiding herself so they couldn't find her & she'd have all of his money. She sued the daughter claiming that she owes $1.3 million for money that she borrowed from her father. News flash, you gold-digging piece of trash: It's your husband's money, not yours, & he can do whatever he wants with it, including giving it to his children. Who is she to say that the children owe HER any money?

This is disgusting. Jean has been married to this man for the last 34 years. There hasn't been any stories about a troubled marriage or anything like that. They have been out of the spotlight living their life. Now, the children from a previous marriage are sniffing around their ailing father. Tell me that money has nothing to do with it. Jean has the right to be with her husband of 34 years. The children do to. Think about the motive. She is his wife. Have the children always been there for their father?

I wonder if the infection started a few months ago, and Jean was aware of it, which is why she took him out of the home and went to Kitsay County. This is probably why Jean would not allow his children from the first marriage to see him. Sounds rather suspicious to me.

Bedsores don't happen overnight. This took place over a long period of time. What was his wife doing when this was developing?

Ms. Kasem, looks like a bimbo. This is not the first time we have seen cases like this where the wife has refused the children of her husband to see him. Any bet it's all about money ?
