School evacuated after teacher's aide suffers apparent breakdown

School Evacuated After Substitute Allegedly Suffers Breakdown

Police and administrators at Van Nuys Elementary School were investigating an incident on campus Monday that triggered an emergency evacuation. The issue reportedly involved a teacher's aide who may have suffered a mental breakdown, KTLA reports.

The woman, identified as Linda Hovanec, arrived at school [that] morning, jumped out of her car and ran onto campus, parents said.

"We saw the car here with the door open and I called the school ... 'everything is fine, don't worry,'" said parent Blanca Cardenas.

But Cardenas said what she saw on campus was far from fine.

Hovanec reportedly banged on classroom doors, threw papers in the air and climbed on top of a table, witnesses said. A student witnessed her screaming at a wall, yelling at children who weren't there.

"Due to a safety concern we had to contact school police, Los Angeles Fire Department, and the paramedics," according to a phone message left for parents by principal Franne Goldstein following the incident.

Hovanec was transported to the Van Nuys police station where she was booked on suspicion of assault, according to Sgt. Steve Gottschalk.

In a letter sent home to parents on Monday, school administrations said, "Those involved were treated for non life-threatening injuries and the employee will not be returning to our school."

KTLA's Christina Pascucci and Mary Beth McDade contributed to this story.

This is typical of how this country treats the mentally ill, throw them in jail. She needs help. Hospitalize her and have her evaluated and if it's determined she needs extensive therapy then place her in a mental health facility. It's shameful the way we treat our mentally ill. What gets me is they closed all the major mental health hospitals during the Reagan administration because the ACLU griped that their right were being violated. Now they get no treatment at all. Typical liberal thinking.

Yeah, my brother and his wife became teachers in a mid-sized school. That lasted two or three years...long enough for them to find out the kids had zero interest in learning anything, the kid's parents had zero interest in getting involved, and there was zero they could do about it.

OK, she's having a mental breakdown and is taken to the police station and booked? So if she is nuts and has access to knives, hammers, guns etc all she has to do is bond out and go on a rampage like that other spoiled brat in Santa Barbara? Of course all the gun grabbers out there are hoping for that

Awful reporting. What happened to 'what', 'where','who' and 'why'? Why don't they say what state it happened in?

Sure, sure, any excuse to get out of school. Just dart her down, sweep up the hallway, and get on with classes. Common Corpse can't wait!
