Soldier surprises little sister at high school graduation

Soldier Surprises Little Sister at High School Graduation

Like her peers at Davenport West High School, senior Desirae Blake was excited to graduate -- but she was sad that her older brother Dustin wouldn't be there to see the big moment.

Her brother, Dustin Blake Wall, has been deployed in Afghanistan. Desirae barely gets to talk to her brother, let alone see him.

"As soon as I found out my son could come back I knew I was going to keep it from her," said mom Denise Blake Herric.

On graduation day, the last thing she thought would come true did. Her brother surprised her by showing up to the ceremony. "When she hugged me I couldn't stop hugging her too," said Dustin.

"It just means a lot to me because he's someone who's kind of always been in my life," said Desirae. "I remember when I was little I kind of always tried to be just like him," said Desirae.

Unfortunately, Dustin was only able to stay for a day. After her graduation, he had to head back to England where he's stationed. Still, it was a day that seniors won't forget -- especially Desirae.

That is exactly what the U.S. Military wants to hear , and why they are arranging all these "surprises"...It's a recruitment tool

I agree this story is great but PLEASE take these stories off of national news!! Put them on a special website just for soldiers and their families when they come home. Anyone can watch them but not on our national news. They are not anymore important that other American families.

We don't watch. We read the headline and are forced to point out the inanity.

Another manufactured "heartwarming" story. Does it ever occur to the news outlets that the families plan this just for the publicity?

In American and dealing with the Biz world as media outlets the only thing that occurs to them is how to make that Greed more! Extinction abounds because of that Biz world, how blind has Greed made you?

The Military wants the publicity/positive press...that's why they are arranging these with certain soldiers and their families who also want to bask in the glory and spotlight

You have no idea what it is like for military families. They had to be without their husbands/wives brother/sister mom/dad and the list goes on for a year or more at one time. My neighbor, his daughter had a friend who was in the Marine Corps and was in Afghanistan, he was going to come home and see his baby boy/girl be born and three months before the birth of his child, he was killed.

The child will never know who his/her father is, what he was like, etc. This baby has to be about 9-10 months old now and has no idea he/she does not have a dad to look up to besides the mother. This was one thing where his daughter's friend's wife was hoping to share but never got the chance.

My brother is in the Navy and for six months after 9/11 he was in the med. I wondered from sun up to sun down if he was going to be alive by the time the six months was up. It was a very stressful way to live for that amount of time, he was on a ship. Of course my mom would never admit she was worried too.

This is a great business opportunity for some enterprising Vet. Pretend to be a relative, show up in uniform and for a fee, the payer gets to be the center of attention for an hour.
