Confused reported congratulates French Open loser

Mahut's Awkward Presser

At a press conference after Nicolas Mahut's match at the French Open, things got a bit uncomfortable when a reporter congratulated the French tennis player... after he lost his opening-round match.

"Congratulations? I lost."

"You lost? Oh, OK. So, what happened out there?"

Ouch! Talk about rubbing salt in the wound. It was definitely a short-lived conversation.

ESPN sportscaster Steve Weissman tweeted out this image of the transcribed exchange:

A writer for SB Nation says the interviewer's lack of awareness was "stunning laziness."

"This member of the media decided his primer on the match was 'I heard you won,' and never looked into it more."

Fox News said, "It's been awhile since I was covering a press conference, but I pretty much know you should watch the game or the match before you actually ask better questions."

But ESPN was a bit gentler on the journalist.

"The mortified reporter meant no harm and was clearly hornswoggled by someone."

Mahut was defeated by 26-year-old Russian tennis player Mikhail Kukushkin.

Hey its a story on AOL. Lets not expect proof reading, spell checking, or anything that resembles journalism. The people that work for AOL are the cheerleaders for Obama, the Kardashians, the Clintons, the gays and various mondo bizzaro stories that have a headline that will cause some interest but the stories are usually much more hype than real story.

Certainly no 'ace' reporter. 'Serves' him right. OK, I'll stop.

Someone stupid enough to use the idiotic ''MEH'' in a post should NOT be commenting on a story about someone else's brain fart. It's not even a fricking word even IF some dictionary decided to include it this year.
Does anyone out there follow their own thinking instead of being a juvenile sheep?

You might spend a teensy weensy second googling a word instead of mocking it's use. It's in the Oxford Dictionary, as well as the Urban Dictionary, ect.

Correction: "Confused reported congratulates French Open loser" -- "Confused reporter" is what you want.

Most interviewers ask the stupidest questions anyway........What does it feel like to win? What did you have to do to win? Morons.

Another example of an inept reporter. He probably did not even write his own copy. So many reporters think they are above writing stories. They want to show up in designer clothes and just READ what someone has written for them. Many times there are many mistakes and many mispronounced words. Yet they seem to continue with no ramifications. Local news must really be suffering for news reporters.

How difficult is it to quickly google the outcome of the match, before entering the interview hall. This reporter has given every reporter a bad eye. I hope he gets off his backside next time and looks up game results first. That is if he still has a job in reporting.
