Murder-suicide leaves 4 dead in California home

By GILLIAN FLACCUS

MISSION VIEJO, Calif. (AP) -- One of four people found dead in a suburban Southern California home killed the other three before committing suicide, authorities said.

On Wednesday, Orange County coroner's investigators are expected to release the names and relationships of the two male and two female victims and provide more information on how they died.

The bodies at the home in Mission Viejo were discovered by Orange County deputies responding to a 911 call from a relative, sheriff's Lt. Jeff Hallock said.

Hallock initially said no suspects were being sought and later disclosed that investigators had determined it was a murder-suicide. He provided only the genders of the victims and said nothing about their ages, relationships or which of them was believed to be the killer.

The bodies remained in the home for most of the day while detectives and coroner's officials examined the scene.

The house is located in a development called Pacific Hills, a modern neighborhood of two-story, upscale homes on winding streets.

Mission Viejo is a city of about 95,000 in the southern section of Orange County about 50 miles southeast of Los Angeles.

Wow, some of you people are truly illiterate. Welfare in this case is pertaining to their 'WELL BEING". SMDH

I can't believe how unintelligent this board is. Numerous people do not know the meaning of the word "welfare". It is not even funny, it is actually pretty sad.

Do these AOl journalists actually attend journalism classes or just bluff their way through them? "The dead people," sounds like something a 3rd-grader would say. It's "deceased." Have some respect.

Not that type of a "welfare". It also means to check on the "welfare" of people. Meaning to check to see if they are fine.

As a retired Police Officer I made many welfare checks. They were always to see if the was okay as some folks neglect their families leaving those who care in limbo as to if they are well, sick or what ever and they get concerned. Occassionally we find some alive but unable to care for themselves and we can take appropriate action. Rareky do we find this kind of scene. Sometimes a lone person has passed away and is just laying there stinking up the place. Not all calls are from family, some just concerned neighbors or friends.

I don't understand, when someone is not happy, why not just do yourself in and let your family grieve, why do you have to take others with you and make more families suffer.

Orange County Register identifies them as Mark and Lydia Sheer. They have an adult son and a teenage daughter and neighbors say they were a normal, happy family. Nobody really knows what goes on behind closed doors.

Surely you jest. "welfare" meaning - I'm concerned about these individuals because I haven't heard from them in a few days. I need to know that they're alright.

For those confused, Welfare, in meaning to check the welfare of the people, not welfare as in government aid!

Sheer was a devoted family man who taught bible study at Mount of Olives Lutheran Church. A neighbor, Carol Cross, said she lived next to the Sheer family for 16 years. Cross described them as a “pleasure to live next to."

From the outside, it was a perfect family. What was going on in the inside we will probably never know but two children had their lives stolen from them because of it. Sadly, these were people of means and had the resources to deal with their issues but one of them chose to die and to take everyone else with him/her.
