102-year-old reveals secret to happy, healthy life

102-Year-Old Man Reveals Secret To Living A Happy, Healthy Life

NEW YORK (PIX11) - At 102 years young, Miguel Cruz sports a shock of white hair, can dominate a pool table and is in better shape than most people four decades younger.

His secret? "Be active."

One of seven siblings, Cruz was born in 1911 in Puerto Rico. He left the island in 1936 and headed to the Big Apple, where he enlisted to fight in World War II.

He married the love of his life in 1946 and settled down in Brooklyn, where they welcomed two children. He ultimately received a degree from Baruch College.

"In reality, my secret is to be active, mentally and physically, all my life," Cruz told PIX11 Tuesday.

He's held a countless amount of jobs and was rarely ever sick, undergoing procedures at 68 to remove two cataracts and 98 to replace a heart valve.

Cruz's doctors said, on paper, they would be worried to operate on a patient his age. But once they met Cruz, they realized it wouldn't be a problem.

"He's young at heart. He has a zest for life and he wants to maintain that quality of life," one of his doctors said, emphasizing the importance of a positive attitude for prolonged health.

Cruz turns 103 in August. He said he'll continue in the routine that has treated him well so far, which includes a breakfast of oatmeal, orange juice and coffee (a meal he's had every morning since he left the Army in 1947).

Bottom line, he won the genetic lottery. You can have all the zest for life you want, but when it's your time to go, you're going. Period.

I was hoping his secret to long life was twelve hours a day at the computer. Oh well...

Good for you Mr. Cruz. You are very fortunate to be healthy and happy at the ripe age of 102. Not many people will ever see and do the things you have done and be able to experience the changes in the world that you have witnessed. May you be blessed with continued good health.

The "trick" is to have great genes.
If you have good genes, you will live to be 100.Unless you get hit by a bus,
If you have crappy genes (like I do) you may fight it for a while but your DNA will ALWAYS win.

Has nothing to do with what he eats and what his exercise routine is. There are young people in the 30's and up who eat healthy and are exercise nuts and die. They come down with an unexpected illness. When it is your time, it is your time. It has nothing to do with vigor. He happens to be blessed and still healthy

Every living organism is born with a fixed time clock for staying alive that differs for everyone. The issue is the environment you live in. Industrial foods, air/water pollution, over population stresses, wars, accidents and stupidity all shorten that life span. The biggest issue is ignorance of cause and effect and poor decision making by all of us. Evolution is a reaction to constant change that is universal throughout the universe. Ignore it and not adapt means you will not stay very long on the tree of life. Blame only yourselve for not living out your true life span.

There is no "secret". Longevity is mostly related to ancestry, not to orange juice and oatmeal. Yes, you can certainly die prematurely by abusing your health, but nothing can guarantee that you'll live to be 100. This is what vitamin companies fail to tell you.

Just imagine how long somebody will live if they have the oatmeal, OJ and coffee combo for breakfast, then have the Scotch and cigar before bed every night! I might try THAT. LOL

He never said he didn't have a scotch and cigar , my great grand father smoked hand rolled Cigars and drank red wine , till he died at age 85, his wife had passed a few years earlier and his zest for life left with her, so basically you can cay he died of a broken heart.
