Thai Army: Ex-PM, protest leaders held 'to think'

BANGKOK (AP) - A spokesman for Thailand's coup leaders says the army will detain former Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, Cabinet members and anti-government protest leaders for up to a week to give them "time to think."

Deputy army spokesman Col. Weerachon Sukondhapatipak said Saturday that Yingluck and dozens of other political figures have had their phones confiscated. He would not reveal their location.

The move appears aimed at preventing any political leaders from contacting supporters to rally them against the coup.

The military seized power on Thursday after two days of peace talks in which neither political faction would agree to step aside. The junta says it acted to prevent more turmoil after months of sometimes violent street protests and deadlock between the elected government and protesters supported by Thailand's elite establishment.

Boy, I wish we could take our extreme left & right-wing politicians off the street for a couple of weeks "to think." But we can't and they can't. (The Tea Party is the best thing that ever happened to the Democractic party.)

Obama and his followers have pushed this country to almost a third world political status like Thailand.

Such uniformed postings from people who know nothing about Thailand.
The truth is that the vast vast majority of Thais welcome this coup. They know it was time. This action is a part of their process and is essentially an enforced time-out that separates the factions and will bring a period of peace. The unknown is what will follow when a government is reformed.
It amazes me that with the utter economic and social failures of the socialist/progressive governments in the west that most westerners think the Thais should emulate western ways and values. Let the Thais do it their own way and maybe we will learn something.

FYI, tourists were always safer in Thailand, even during the protests, than virtually any city in the USA. Nothing has changed in that regard with the military takeover.

I have lived in Thailand, I am married to a Thai woman and own a house there. I have a huge family living in the north east and my two best friends are higher up's in the Thai police force. Reading below, both Richard and dj51 are correct and I agree with both of them. Thai people are by no means western, they do things Thai style and there's no getting around that. I have complete confidence that they will figure this out and do the right thing. They are doing this for the good of the country. The King and the Buddhist Monks really run Thailand and dispite what any of you think, they will see the people through.
We need the crooks on both sides D & R locked up. But starting first with the main democrats in power who are running this country into the ground. You can't blame everything on the Republicans after the Democrats have been in power for the last 6 years. The American Communist party is alive and well hiding behind the Democratic party's skirts

Thailand is a great nation with law abiding strong people. If the military has seen fit to intervene in the political process, then it is highly probable that the same collectivist plague that took Vietnam and Cambodia is endangering Thai society. Don't assume that the military is automatically wrong. They would rather leave things alone except that they fear for the nation.

Get a grip, just because history to you only goes back to when you were born yesterday does not mean it hasn't happened. Just because you don't know anything about what has happened before your time frame does not mean it influence things today, even know nothings such as yourself.
As a conservative, I see nitwits like you obsessed over the President making him the cause of everything that happens in the world, as all the other idiots on this Board who also have made the President the centerpiece to this story about Thailand that has nothing at all to do with him, each one of you knuckleheads that continues carrying on including the President in every story from the hockey playoffs to flossing teeth need more than the 3rd grade level education you never got beyond, even though you were not left back and may even have managed to go through the dumbed down excuses for college educations that are prevelant throughout society today.

Banana Republic needs a strongman to reign in the chaos.
Democracy only work well when a country's educated population has risen to become a critical factor.
