California Chrome unfazed by opossum encounter

NEW YORK (AP) -- California Chrome was unfazed by a chance encounter with an opossum that crossed the track at Belmont Park as the Triple Crown hopeful was ending his gallop.

The chestnut colt didn't flinch when he passed the cat-sized opossum as he completed his 1 3/4-mile run Friday.

Assistant trainer Alan Sherman says coyotes have appeared at California Chrome's home track in Los Alamitos, California, so the opossum wasn't a big deal.

Sherman says California Chrome will visit the Belmont paddock and starting gate once or twice next week as part of his preparations for the Belmont Stakes on June 7.

The colt is trying to become the first horse to sweep the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont in 36 years.

You missed the point. Horses can get spooked by shadows on the track. This horse took the intruder and didn't miss a beat. It may not be a big deal for people who don't follow horse racing but fans are hoping to see history made

May I offer a correction to your comment only in friendship and good feeling toward your eloquent good wishes for our latest hero from out here in Southern California? Considering the imposing challenge that Alydar posed to Affirmed every step of the way through the Triple Crown in '78, may we be witness to the spirits of Secretariat, Affirmed, AND Alydar having RISEN again inside the soul of Calif Chrome! Thank you, gl1357, for such an inspirational message here on this Internet board. I had lost all hope here. (BTW, I was 12 when each race's announcers proclaimed, "It's Affirmed, and it's Alydar...Now it's Alydar and THEN Affirmed...Now it's Affirmed and then Alydar"....; I'm mainly a baseball fan at heart, so I hope what I've percieved as "joy" on the faces of the winning equines at places like Santa Anita, Hollywood Park, Golden Gate Fields, is not misplaced. Is the "joy" of winning based on the "intelligent Brain?" Is it inherent throughout? Intel vs. EMOTION?! How dare I!

To: California Chrome,
This is Sea Bisquit and Sectretariat wishing you the best at Belmont. You are a special breed of equine: beauty, strength, speed, intelligence, and pure guts. Belmont will be a test of your endurance, it is the longest distance of the three tracks (~2.82 km). Sec. and I took it slow at the start, and about 1/2 way we knew that we had Belmont in the bag. Go for it Ca. Chrome, join the few of us that made history.

it is actually a very good sign...shows horse is focused on running and not watching surroundings while on track....could have been devastating if he had been spooked.

Once one experiences a possum sitting on a fence and displaying his teeth, you know that is an animal that could if provoked, do some serious damage... But if you leave it alone it just dissapears into the night.

Really, Aol? Opossums do not attack unless protecting their young or have been infected with rabies. Your headline made it sound like a mountain lion or some other predator was on the track.
