Meet the boy who won the 2014 National Geographic Bee

Va. Eighth-Grader Wins 2014 National Geographic Bee

WASHINGTON (AP) -- An eighth-grader from northern Virginia has outlasted nine other young scholars to win the National Geographic Bee.

Akhil Rekulapelli (ak-HEEL REH-kuhl-uh-PELL-ee), of Sterling, Virginia, finished fourth in last year's bee. This year, the 13-year-old answered all three questions right in a one-on-one showdown with the youngest of the 10 finalists, 11-year-old Ameya Mujumdar (uh-MAY-uh moo-JOOM-dahr), of Tampa, Florida.

The decisive question: What African country is building a new capital called Oyala in the rain forest, 65 miles east of the current capital, Bala? The answer: Equatorial Guinea.

Akhil receives a $50,000 scholarship, a trip to the Galapagos Islands with his family and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.

Akhil says he aspires to become a surgeon. He says winning the bee is his greatest accomplishment so far.

I used to think that I was pretty good at geography. Note: "used to". These kids make me look pretty sad. They should all be congratulated. Smart and dedicated kids.

Look for `Google boy` Kautilya on the Internet. Kid is only 6 years old.

For many years the spelling bees have been won by children who are raised by parents from a foreign culture of studying, studying, studying, frequently they are second or third generation offspring from India. They are leaving the 'typical' American kids behind in a cloud of dust.

Fact is - other than the native Americans - every one of us comes from foreign blood. Actually most foreigners come from other countrie's blood as well - ok not going back to Eden here - you get my drify!

My friends son just sent the USF medical school class picture, there are about six caucasians, the rest of the class is all Indians, and Asians, about 70% are female.
Why, you ask? Our little caucasian white geniuses are watching the cartoon channel, playing video games, they don't even go to skateboard anymore, too lazy. That's OK, we'll have great medical care and someone has to put tires on my car at Goodyear. It won't be this kid who won the spelling bee, he'll be doing my open heart surgery.

Your a complete idiot. If the kid had been in "white face" you wouldn't have commented.

It's not a comment other than to show that
we as a country if we dedicate ourselves to education with two loving parents guiding us
the path for education will turn out as productive and successful adults. Congratulations to the winner and to all that entered.

We have to teach our children the value of intelligence over peer pressure. I am happily a nerd and I am still amazed at all that these wonderful children have learned.

He wants to be a surgeon. Oh God, not another one. Wouldn't he be happier working in customer service for Apple or another computer?
