Lucy Li youngest qualifier for Women's Open

11-Year-Old Li Qualifies For U.S. Open

Lucy Li has become the youngest player to qualify for the U.S. Women's Open by winning the sectional qualifier at Half Moon Bay in California.

The 11-year-old Li shot rounds of 74-68 on the par-72 Old Course on Monday. She will surpass Lexi Thompson as the youngest qualifier in the U.S. Women's Open, which is June 19-22 at Pinehurst No. 2. Thompson was 12 in the 2007 Open.

Beverly Klass played the 1967 Open when she was 10. There was no qualifying.

Li, of Redwood Shores, California, already has a big win on her resume. She captured the girls 10-11 division at the inaugural Drive, Chip and Putt contest at Augusta that preceded the Masters this year. She beat second-place qualifier Kathleen Scavo by seven strokes at Half Moon Bay.

It's funny we think she's too young for golf, but have no problem with many female gymnasts in the Olympics. One as young as 11 won a silver medal. Many have participated at 12.

That is not possible anymore with the new minimum age restrictions.

Sorry but there should be a minimum age limit of 16 for any professional sport. It has to be due to her growth in physical sense and mental and emotional growth.

How much did Dad pay to keep any real competition away from the qualifier?

Much to young. This child needs to enjoy being a little girl. Also, there should be a 16 - 18 age limit to participate. The men's senior tour has 50 year age limit.

Michelle Wie was a child phenom and moved up waaay too early. Ruined her career. Now eight years later she is finally recovering. As Tiger oberved at the time, and it has proven true in her case, you need to learn to win at each level along the way so that when you reach the top, you can handle it.

I understand what you are saying. I was a mediocre golfer and enjoying the sport very much, always playing other golfers of my calibre. The part I really enjoyed was when my ball would go into the woods, which would set up some problems, that I would try to figure how best to get out. Now that was FUN1. Eventually I became a scratch golfer, always hitting the fairways, with good shots to the green. BORING! All of the fun went out of the sport for me. I actually gave my clubs away, and gllad i did. Tis little girl might have the same experience somewhere along the way. When you hit a ball and know where its going time after time after time. Its time to try something else.
