NBA charges Sterling, sets up June 3 hearing

By BRIAN MAHONEY
AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK (AP) -- The NBA charged Donald Sterling on Monday with damaging the league and its teams by making racist comments, setting up a hearing planned for June 3 after which owners could vote to terminate his ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers.

The league also said the banned owner has engaged in other conduct that has impaired its relationship with fans and merchandising partners.

"All of these acts provide grounds for termination under several provisions of the NBA constitution and related agreements," the league said in a statement.

Sterling was banned for life and fined $2.5 million by Commissioner Adam Silver after the release of a recording in which he made racist remarks. He has until May 27 to respond to the charge, and the right to appear at the hearing and make a presentation in front of the board of governors.

If three-fourths of the owners vote to sustain the charge, Sterling will be forced to sell the team he has owned since 1981.

Sterling told a female friend, V. Stiviano, not to bring blacks to Clipper games during their conversation that was recorded. Sterling specifically mentioned Magic Johnson, then criticized the NBA Hall of Famer again as a poor model during a recent interview with CNN.

"Among other things, Mr. Sterling disparaged African-Americans and "minorities"; directed a female acquaintance not to associate publicly with African-Americans or to bring African-Americans to Clippers games; and criticized African-Americans for not supporting their communities," the NBA said.

If it is a secret private vote they will not get the 3/4 votes.
If they make it a public vote they will vote him out!
It is a sad day in America when a person can be punished for their private feelings illegally recorded and publicly shared to intentionally embarrass them.

As Ibwalnj says, it is all about the income of the other owners, becasue Sterling is causing loss of advertising, which is a big part of their income.

He didn't break the law. He broke the liberal progressive "politically incorrect" rules.
I break them every day. The NBA commissioner needs to be fired and the commission needs to worry about the real issues. LIke fixing games, players using drugs and felons playing pro ball. It's time these players made $1 million a year, not $18 million. It's time a game cost $5 to attend, not $50+. It's no longer about the sport, it's about money. And if it was about the sport....the bigots, the haters and the liberal would leave it alone...............IMHO

I though BULLYING was illegal. How about Bullying an old man who has signs of being demented? The Media, Johnson , and the NBA Commissioner are all BULLYING him. I believe the illegal tape was altered, given to TMZ probably by Johnson or one of his thugs. This is all about Magic wanting to buy the Clippers and Sterling saying no.

THE NBA is wrong..what a railroad job. Information was gathered illegally, probably by a man that tapped Sterling's phone for much more personal gain reasons than catching him verbalize the words "black people". What did that tapper really want to learn about Sterling?? How to steal from him or the like?? The tapper should be jailed for tapping and releasing the recording.

The players, the fans, all of them use vulgar ethnic slurs about whites and blacks. It's not "whitey" or such. Hypocrites every one of them. Worst case...Sterling uttered "Black people" The last I knew, we had freedom of speech and protection from illegal search and seizure. If the blacks and others that believe we need to ***** foot around to avoid hurting others' feelings have their way... nothing will be "(censored) and white"

One adapts to their environment...not the environment adapts to the one.
