Rush Limbaugh wins children's book award

Books-Limbaugh
By Hillel Italie

NEW YORK (AP) - Rush Limbaugh has won a children's book prize designed to be chosen by kids themselves.

But that doesn't mean all of his voters were young people.

On Wednesday night, Limbaugh received the Children's Choice Book Award for author of the year, defeating such superstars as Veronica Roth, Rick Riordan and "Diary of a Wimpy Kid" writer Jeff Kinney, the winner in 2012 and 2013. The conservative commentator won for "Rush Revere and the Brave Pilgrims," a book that landed high on the best-seller lists of Amazon.com and other outlets despite limited mainstream coverage.

From the moment Limbaugh's nomination was announced, in March, conservatives were delighted, liberals angered and others simply puzzled - emotions only amplified by Limbaugh's victory, which raised his book from No. 71 on Amazon the day before to the top 10 Thursday.

Nominees are selected by the most objective method possible, sales, while the winners are supposedly picked by kids, who vote online. But executive director Robin Adelson of the Children's Book Council and Every Child a Reader, nonprofit organizations that co-founded the awards seven years ago, acknowledged Thursday that adults could easily vote and vote multiple times, a problem not uncommon for Internet competitions.

"Every one of our finalists gets fake votes every year," Adelson told The Associated Press. "We like to think that's the enthusiasm of adults who love children's books."

Adelson cited three ways that people can vote: a widget that can be embedded in such popular kids' websites as www.poptropica.com, a link on the awards website (http://ccbookawards.com) that allows individuals to vote and a link on the awards site that allows teachers, librarians and others to submit bulk votes on behalf of their institution.

Adelson said she doubted that parents or other grown-ups were voting through Poptropica, but acknowledged the awards site was more likely to be manipulated. An individual voter can vote multiple times and does not need to provide a verifiable email address or proof of his or her age. Bulk voters are required to submit a verifiable email, but there is no guarantee that a given teacher or librarian is really expressing the wishes of others.

"We send emails and make phone calls. A lot of manual labor goes into verifying (bulk voters)," Adelson said. "Do we catch them all? Of course not."

Limbaugh has touted his nomination on his radio show and on his website, www.rushlimbaugh.com . Adelson said Limbaugh initially enjoyed a wide lead, but that voting tightened considerably in the final weeks and the outcome was "fair and close."

"It's not as if he received millions of votes and everybody else and received 10," she said. "It was far, far closer."

Adelson said total votes this year only increased modestly, from 1.1 million to 1.2 million, and added that voting has generally gone up each year. She emphasized the awards have no mission beyond encouraging kids to read.

"We've received some hate mail," she said. "We've been accused of endorsing Rush Limbaugh and supporting Rush Limbaugh. We endorse and support children."

Typical Liberal view, if we didn't win then they didn't play fair.

Why be surprised all of his followers are on a first grade reading level that's why he calls them ditto heads (people that can't think for themselves). Take America back is code and being a patriot is another code, we know what it means. I tell you this though we're not going back so get over it, the clock is not turning back, so keep wishing for your white world it's not happening.

Well, Stan, if "take America back" & "patriot" are supposed "code" then quite possibly YOU might actually benefit from reading his book since it is written at a grade school comprehension level you would be able to understand. While I do not listen to any talk radio programs like Rush, and his counter hate-mongering leftist show hosts, all I have to do is read through these posts to see the leftists hate him. So, I have to assume they are the SAME ilk who scream "RACIST" at anyone who dares criticize Obama rather then to recognize that EVERY POTUS is prone to criticism and that the skin color does NOT imply said POTUS is PERFECT therefore racism could be the ONLY reason he is criticized! Seems like that same argument by leftists does not carry the same assertion when they themselves are tossing hate filled barbs at other blacks such as Condi Rice, Ben Carson, Adam West, Thomas Clarence who are all Republicans. Shame on you.

i just dont like the mans tone of voice, he may be educated and wise and even somewhat famous, and he know poilics very well, but to sit and listen to him talk, i would rather kill myself then to hear his mouth all day, glad for the book, maybe he should write more and speak less

It kinda sounds like an election run by the Left: No proof of who's voting or how many times!

The Left hates it when their own plans backfire!

Rush alway has called them as he see them with the truth to back it up. I looked at the reviews on Amazon. You can tell the real HATERS that had to comment but never actually read the book. Ditto's Rush and your Two if by Tea ain't bad either.

Sure, bash the conservative and make excuses for everyone else. I have both of Rush's books, and they are awesome. At least there is one source for the truth about America's founding. Can't be found in public schools any more. God bless you, Rush.

It's about time someone wrote a non fiction children's book about about the founding of our country. Young people are no longer taught about how our country began in our school's anymore. Great job Rush. We need more books like this to educate our kids on the things that really matter..

Funny how when the left finds a boggy man they try to destroy that person every time they can. Mean is Mean and if you look it up in the dictionary you will see Democrat/leftist.

This book has nothing to do with politics. Read it you might kearn something.

What's the book about, how to bully other children and lie all the time and hate others? Giving this jerk an award of any kind is criminal! Shame on this group!
