OWN Series Will Follow Michael Sam's Journey To The NFL

Fans of the NFL's first openly gay draftee will get to see a lot more of his personal life. Michael Sam's journey to the league will play out in a documentary series on the Oprah Winfrey Network.

The New York Times reports the 24-year-old defensive end has been under the microscope since he came out as gay in February. Now he's opening up his life to the cameras even further.

Oprah's three-year-old OWN channel announced the multi-part documentary series Wednesday. It doesn't yet have a release date.

But, in a news release, Oprah herself commented. "We are honored that Michael is trusting us with his private journey in this moment that has not only made history but will shape it forever."

Sam's story will be in the hands of filmmaker Amy Rice, the same woman behind perhaps the channel's highest-profile series, "Lindsay."

Sam also spoke up in the statement from OWN, saying football was of course his number one priority right now, but that he hoped getting his story out there might help other people accept who they are.

And he seemed pretty excited about it online, plugging the announcement on his Twitter account Wednesday.

ESPN reports Sam was drafted over the weekend by the St. Louis Rams. He still needs to be signed to a contract to become the league's first openly gay player.

Unbelievable Tim Tebow was vilified for his faith and shunned out of the NFL and this guy is praised and welcomed for his homosexuality that says a lot about where our country was and is headed.

It's too bad the Rams were not still in California, cause he could have made the team for sure with that bunch of liberals. Imagine, dogs eating at your table in a restaurant now that it's legal there, but will only be until some guy comes in with his pet leopard and demands the same treatment. I'm telling you we gotta outnumber the liberals now so we can slow it down a little, then, when the situation warrants you can vote liberal if you believe in something. Isn't that the way it should always be. Yeah,I thought so too!!!

I feel sorry for the other players on the Rams. They have to deal with a media circus now because some idiot needs to advertise that he is gay to get attention. No one else in the NFL advertises that they are straight why does he need to say he's gay unless he wants attention or he's trolling. Keep your personal life to yourself idiot.

if a doctor gave a man a week to live and somehow 1 year later he still with us, and the doctors run test and say, we cant find a thing wrong with you, its a miracle, and then 1 year later he try out for the NFL, AND LIKE MAGIC HE MAKE THE TEAM, he would get less attention then micheal sam is geting for being gay, when in fact there be a true miracle has manifested in this man life as to live but then play football would truly be something to marvel at, and write about and it would make good tv , but for this man sam to be geting all this attention for just being gay, is quiet strange indeed, and they do it for some reason which i know not, for they should be offering some kind of medical help to overcome his sexual desire, and not as to praise him for it, like he be a hero, for he be not a hero nor a miracle man,he is a man with a gift to play football just like every other person who gets a contract, there is nothing special about him, how be it then that everyone see him as so

Please, Oprah, STOP! Let this young man live his life. No one needs to know about his "personal" journey. What anyone chooses to do in their bedroom, is their own PRIVATE business. If you really care about this young man, please give him respect and give him privacy.
