Letterman Tells Walters He Regrets Treatment Of Lewinsky

Letterman Tells Walters He Regrets Treatment Of Lewinsky

One last meeting of two media titans. Wednesday night Barbara Walters was a guest on the "Late Show." With both she and David Letterman on the verge of retirement, it was quite a retrospective conversation - and Letterman revealed a regret.

Monica Lewinsky's recent article in Vanity Fair came up, because, of course...

ABC points out Walters famously interviewed her after her 1990s affair scandal with President Bill Clinton.
"I started to feel bad because myself and other people with shows like this made relentless jokes."

"I feel bad about my role in helping push the humiliation to the point of suffocation."
"Good, then we can stop it."

In her article, Lewinsky talks about the pain of the constant media critique and ridicule she underwent during the scandal. Since then, she hasn't been able to leave it behind - she even gets rejected for jobs.

The Washington Post dubbed Walters' and Letterman's conversation "...fascinating, as the way it only can [be] between two people who have been in the business as long as they have."

Letterman even compared the scandal to the recent viral video of Solange Knowles seemingly attacking Jay Z. He wondered if it was fair to make jokes because the three are famous, or if it needed to be recognized as a "sad human situation." (Via TMZ)

Letterman also said he felt particulary bad because Lewinsky was so young at the time, in her early 20s, as he put it "just a kid." Kind to say, maybe, but Walters pointed out she had never heard Lewinsky use her young age as an excuse.

As for Lewinsky's job status, Letterman asked if Walters had ever offered her a position on "The View." The longtime host wouldn't get into details, but said there'd been an opportunity, but it isn't the type of job Lewinsky wants.

Walters' last day on "The View" is this week.

" Poor little Monica " told friends, when she got the position of Whitehouse intern ,
that she would have to get " Presidential kneepads " -- so , she wasn't innocent from the begining.

Letterman is little more than a sick-o creep. My lifetime viewing time is probably less than 5 minutes, including commercials.

The idea that he's been on the air for so long suggests that he belongs to a special creeps club that get their jollies from mocking good people.

You probably need a bit more minutes, watching though. "Creep"? There have been times: Palin's youngest daughter and A-Rod, perhaps the lowest. And his own infidelities, exposing the hypocrisy.

Long ago and far away, the best comedy was done with technique, story-telling, and some creative thought. For Letterman, his writers go to the mucky bottom of the barrel, the personal-make-fun-of, even scatology, at times. Easy laughs. Easy marks. But hurtful, mean-spirited.

jeb,

Letterman mocks the bad citizens also. Anthony Weiner, Larry Craig, Kin Jong Un, Khaddafi; nobody's immune.

I never watch this jerk. In the past, having seen him insult guests, I came to the realization that he's a small person, and not a nice person at all.

All though I don't like Letterman; he at least made I think a sincere effort to admit something he regrets...to bad some of the other liberals and media jerks couldn't do the same.

Yes you will never, ever, ever, ever get a CONservative to admit a mistake ever. Even when they miss the warning of the world trade center attack, fail to deal with a huge hurricane striking New Orleans or cause complete financial collapse in 2008 ....again, CONservatives will NEVER admit being wrong. After all if CONservatives and republiCONs would apologize when they are wrong they would never stop apologizing.

Guess you only read what you want to. Conservtives have apologized many but it is rarely reported, and when it is, the story tends to get a bit snarky. Too ban mainstream media can't treat both parties the same.

I have yet to hear a SINGLE CONservative apologize for the economic collapse of 2008 let alone admit they were are remain wrong. Mostly they have doubled down on the stupid claiming that the real problem was that their idiocies were not pushed hard enough. In fact I still hear CONservatives claiming that the republiCON policies for the prior 10 years had nothing to do with the 1929 crash and that everything they did was right and everything Roosevelt did was wrong. I have NEVER heard a CONservative admit being wrong about ANYTHING except to claim that their idiocy was not pursued agressively enough.

Nice, but not quite enough for me. Back when Dave started making fun of Monica and then said horrible things about Linda Tripp because of her looks, that's when he lost me. Since he's become a dad, he's softened - but not enough. I always wonder when he makes fat jokes whether that's the way he wants his son, Harry to grow up - don't think so.

Geesh lighten up. Late night comedy is rude, that is why its on late. Should Monica be defended? She did a dumb thing as did Clinton and dumb mistakes are made fun of. By the way, I saw Monica about two years after it all, laying on a piano, in a tight red dress with great cleavage, in Pat O'Brian's surrounded by male college students, singing love songs using the microphone in a suggestive way. It was chaos. They asked her to leave. She loved it as she loved using her name to sell pocketbooks on the internet and got a million dollars for doing Jenny Craig commercials and used her name. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dbzg0M_OSao She used her fame as Presidential BJ queen and her excess weight. Don't feel sorry for her. She must be broke. Making fun of looks? Gee that's new. Obama gets it for his ears, Christie for his weight, Boehner for his orange tan and his crying and the list goes on.

What a SCUMBAG he apologizes for Lewinsky but he doesn't apologize for calling Sarah Palin 14 year old daughter a tramp.

A little late in the game now Letterman. You made millions and millions of dollars making fun of people. You changed big time once you supposedly went liberal. Face the facts dude, you're a card carrying 1%er.

bal,

Dave's a 'Bhole, a misogynist, a card-carrying '1%er,' a troll, a hack, a worm, he's swine, a louse, a mealy-mouthed lefty, a twit, a dipsh*t, a clod, a snake, a lizard, an amorphous amoeba, a hippo, a mountain lion, an alligator, a smallmouth bass and a whale.

He's also funny as hell.
