Caught on camera: Cat saves boy from dog attack

By Jennifer Chaussee

(Reuters) - A California child pulled from his bike by an attacking dog was saved by his family's cat on Tuesday, which quickly rushed in and attacked the dog, a video posted on YouTube showed on Wednesday.

The video, which quickly spread on the Internet, shows a young boy playing on a driveway in Bakersfield, when a dog lunges at his leg, grabs hold of it with his jaws and drags the boy off of the bike.

A dark cat swiftly hurls itself onto the dog and chases it down the driveway and away from the child before a woman runs to help the boy. Local media reported the video was from multiple security cameras and shows graphic pictures of the bite wounds sustained by the boy.

"Thankfully, it wasn't worse," his father, Roger Triantafilo, wrote in posting the video. "My son is fine."

Bakersfield police said the attacking dog, identified as an 8-month-old Labrador-Chow mix, had been surrendered by its owner's family after the Tuesday afternoon attack and was in quarantine and would ultimately be euthanized.

Police spokesman Sergeant Joseph Grubbs said the dog's owners, who live in the same neighborhood as the boy, said the dog did not like children or bicycles. He did not identify the owner by name.

The Triantafilo family could not be reached for immediate comment.

Lock up the dogs, they are a menace, and quit trying to eradicate cats from the world.

Don't you say that about dogs!!!! My dog saved my life. He was a stray, 85lbs, a big dog and totally devoted. One day someone came up behind me when I returned from the grocery and pushed me into the house. My darling dog, Beethoven, dashed out of my daughter's room -- his favorite place in the whole world -- and attacked the intruder. Without Beethoven I wouldn't be here and that's a fact! He died several years ago, at the age of 17. He was a big dog and they're supposed to have shorter lifespans but the vet said he lived so long because he knew he was loved and he didn'nt want to leave. DON'T YOU EVER SAY ANYTHING BAD ABOUT DOGS!!!! Dogs are truly man's (and woman's) best friend.

Dogs will not maliously attack people... it must have been the noise that was bothering it... the owners should try to know their dog and know that it's hyper sensitive to noise... it also should not have been loose... now the poor ithing s going to be euthanized.

The dog should not have been running loose. But in its defense, some dogs are enraged by certain sounds -- such as the squeak of the tricycle -- and almost all dogs want to chase and stop rolling objects such as bikes and wheelchairs. I've seen people take bikes and strollers into dog parks and it's just asking for trouble -- and the dog, doing what is natural for them -- gets blamed for not understanding people behavior. We're smarter, we need to understand dog behavior. Basic to understanding them: don't make high pitched noises around them, don't run at a dog, don't ride any kind of wheels around them, don't eat food around them unless you plan to share it. And keep your dog confined where it can't get into trouble. and Kudos to the CAT. Love Cats.

If you know your dog doesn't like children or bicycles. why the hell would you let it run loose in a neighborhood with children? Also, why did the boy's mother not scoop him up & run? She takes off & leaves the little boy on the ground to fend for himself. I can understand she was probably in a panic, but still....... Way to go kitty!!!!

Can you understand that the dog was coming back, and Mom ran to put herself between him and her child while he ran to safety?

Honestly WHY are so many people jumping to the wrong conclusion about this mother? Are all of you that negative and judgmental?

That cat deserves fresh fish, chicken, and whatever else it wants until the day it dies. Fortunately, that stupid dog won't live to see too many more sunrises.

The dog is not stupid, the owner is. Animals respond to instinct and proper training. If it's the dogs first offense I hope it's spared and the owner get a might stiff fine. Fence in his yard, supervise the dog when outside or get trained so he can communicate with the dog.
