Bill Clinton vouches for Hillary's health

WASHINGTON (AP) - Former President Bill Clinton said Wednesday his wife Hillary took six months to recover from a 2012 concussion, adding she is now "stronger than I am" as he dismissed GOP strategist Karl Rove's comments about her health.

"I got to give him credit, you know, that embodies that old saying that 'consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds,'" Bill Clinton said at a Washington conference. "First they said she faked her concussion. And now they say she's auditioning for a part on 'The Walking Dead.'"

The former secretary of state fell ill with a stomach bug in December 2012 after returning from a trip to Europe, leaving her severely dehydrated. While at home, she fainted and fell, suffering a concussion. The illness forced her to reschedule her testimony to Congress about the deadly attack months earlier in Benghazi, Libya.

The New York Post reported Tuesday that Rove suggested at a private conference near Los Angeles last week that Clinton suffered brain damage. Rove disputed that he was referring to any brain damage.

"I didn't say she had brain damage. I said she had a serious health episode," he said on Fox News.

Rove told Fox News, for which he is a commentator, that Clinton had a "serious health episode" that would be a legitimate issue for her in a potential bid for the Democratic presidential nomination "whether she likes it or not."

Clinton allies and the White House pushed back on Rove's comments, and Bill Clinton said he was "sort of dumbfounded" by the remarks.

"Look, she works out every week, she is strong, she's doing great. As far as I can tell, she's in better shape than I am," the former president said.

After Hillary Clinton's concussion, doctors discovered a blood clot in a vein that runs between the skull and the brain behind her right ear and she was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital for treatment with blood thinners. She was released after a brief hospitalization.

Bill Clinton said it was serious and took her six months to recover.

The former president also defended his wife's response to the Sept. 11, 2012 Benghazi attack that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

His comments came as the House pushes ahead with a special select committee to investigate the attacks, U.S. security at the diplomatic mission, the military's response and the Obama administration's explanation of what happened.

Hillary Clinton is certain to be asked to testify by the GOP-led panel.

"In my opinion, Hillary did what she should have done, she impaneled a very high-level review committee," Bill Clinton said.

He was referring to the Accountability Review Board investigation by former diplomat Thomas Pickering and retired Adm. Mike Mullen, the former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

"They looked into what was wrong, they gave 29 recommendations, she took them and started implementing them," Bill Clinton added.

House Speaker John Boehner has appointed seven Republicans to serve on the panel. Democrats are weighing whether to participate in an inquiry that many in the party have described as a political stunt, pointing to the multiple independent and bipartisan investigations that have already been conducted.

And tell us when Bill got his license to practice medicine. Every candidate needs an idependent check up. But we all know how the "clinton's" like to get their way, don't we ? She's incompetent for this office anyway. she couldn't do her job as Sec. of State, nor did she finish it...Hmmmmm. I don't want another clinton in there, as much as I don't want another Bush..

Hmmm...I was not aware that Hillary Clinton had announced yet that she is even a candidate for the Dem POTUS primary elections. Apparently YOU & Rove are BOTH jumping the gun here? And, as far as her not doing her job as SOS - FYI: the ROLE of any SOS serving any POTUS is NOT to establish USA''s foreign policy/ Foreign policy is ESTABLISHED ONLY BY POTUS & the role of any SOS is to CONDUT the policy established by POTUS. So, if you think she was not doing her job then I suggest what you really mean is that OBAMA'S FOREIGN POLICY WAS NON-EXISTENT!

I have just been informed by an associate that Senator Rand Paul is an eye Dr, It would have been better if Carl Rove had consulted him to make an assessment before he prematurely went public to pollute the political water.

It is natural for Bill Clinton to take up for his wife. That doesn't necessarily mean that anything he says is credible. I do hope the entire Benghazi matter is concluded soon. We are all tired of hearing about it. There is enough evidence already to prove the White House involved itself in a massive cover up much like Nixon did in Watergate. Enough already.

Far cry from Watergate. This is four americans that were brutally tortured and murdered.

Main stream media still does not report on it. So... most people do not know about Benghazi.

Got to agree with you. The Dems are much better at mud throwing - like labeling Romney a dog abuser; McCain & Reagan too old to be POTUS; the Clintons as being racists and Hillary as playing the female card for a brief tearing up during the NH campaign back in the 2008 DEM primary run (remember Chris Matthews & Keith Olbermans' snarky anti-Hillary pro-Barry campaign back then???????). I'm a Hillary supporter so I watched her 2008 campaign very closely. I'd love to see her run again & watch how snarky anti-Hillary Matthews & those turn coat Congressional black caucus Dems explain their insinuations the Clintons were racists back then!

I rather agree that Romney abused his dog......how many people would put a pet on top of a car on the freeway? If you can't deal with a dog, leave it at home with a dog-sitter or find a good kennel to care for it. I don't recall the Clintons being labeled as racists, at least not by the Democrats.
About Reagan being too old to be POTUS....I think most people realized he was starting to lose it, and Alzheimers can hit anyone of almost any age. Of course, according to a friend who worked in films with him, he had to have the script cued constantly to remember his lines, though he did put on a good act.

How can you back this woman after Benghazi, or do you wear blinkers like the racehorses do and only see what makes her look good. God bless you and this country if she should ever win!

Its a stunt. The gop has little chance of putting up a candidate that can win against Hillary. They are a bunch of wind bags with no direction and can't find their rearends with both hands let alone come up with anything but bs. If the gop led congress worked for anyone that could fire them on the spot for not doing their job the unemployment lines would be growing everyday. GO Hillary.

You may be right about them, but to avoid sounding like a hypocrite you might want to include the Obama folks who managed to silence any & all inquiry/complaints/questions about Obama by labeling the questioner or opponent as "racist" for daring to ask anything or express an honest observation! You might also want to include Al Sharpton, Waters, Sheila Jackson Lee and even Nancy Pelosi in that BULLY catalog too. Talk about manipulation personified!
