Prosecutor: Pistorius should get mental evaluation

May. 13, 2014 6:25 AM EDT

PRETORIA, South Africa (AP) - The chief prosecutor in the murder trial of Oscar Pistorius has asked that the double-amputee runner be placed under psychiatric evaluation after an expert witness testified that he had an anxiety disorder.

Prosecutor Gerrie Nel on Tuesday noted that a psychiatrist for the defense had testified that the disorder that she diagnosed in Pistorius may have played a role in his fatal shooting of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp in his home on Feb. 14, 2013.

Nel has acknowledged that an evaluation of Pistorius' state of mind at a government facility could mean the trial will be delayed. On Monday, he referred to a 30-day evaluation period.

Pistorius says he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he shot her. Prosecutors say he killed her in anger after an argument.

So, why wasn't this noticed before now? He had plenty of time to get evaluated! This whole sham of a trial is so disrespectful to Reeva!

What is the debate here? He admitted to shooting her! Its called HOMICIDE. Events leading up to, and immediately afterwards, are all speculation..... and UNIMPORTANT. It is violence of a man on a woman! Nothing to discuss: 25 years in prison, period. Thank you for your participation.

30 day evaluation for Pistorious???? SURE more time to try to find him NOT guilty .
He DID NOT mistook Steenkamp for an intruder. He knew full well and exactly what he was doing.. HE is just a cold hearted murderer.Simple as that...

Intruder, you mean the Lady Reeva that was tucked into bed right beside him? Didn't he acknowledge her absence and wonder where she was?

Well yes, I'm sure everyone could see he was anxious, crying, throwing up, head in hands most of the time. I doubt that was for the loss of Reeba. Why are there so many delays? I think he has an anger disorder. Many people that knew him, said he became angry very easily.

I'm not sure how the law works in Africa but here in the states, I'm sure the trial would be over by now.

People who are afraid of going to prison act the same way. It is NEVER a "given" that tears shed are for the victim. This whole case smells of a greedy, self-serving rich guy with anger issues who acts out when he doesn't get his way. He knew darned well, that his girlfriend was hiding in the bathroom behind a locked door out of fear of him.

It won't be long before Pistorius pleads not guilty by reason of insanity.
