Lost Vincent Van Gogh Painting Discovered In Safe Deposit Box

A painting by Van Gogh that went missing 40 years ago might've finally been found.

Tax collectors in Spain came across what they believe is a long lost Van Gogh painting, titled "Cypress Sky and Country." It dates back to 1889 and thought to have been missing for decades.

According to El Mundo, it was found in a safe-deposit box during an operation to collect contents of more than 500 safety boxes of tax offenders.

On the back of the painting, seals show it belonged to three museums - the last located in Vienna where it was last seen. It's still unclear how it left the museum and some speculate it might have been stolen.

Van Gogh also reportedly painted several versions of the piece - one sold for almost $60 million at an auction 20 years ago. Investigators are still working to determine how it ended up in the safety deposit box.

Van Gogh's work has popped up around the world after going unseen for decades.

Last year, a Virginia man revealed a painting from 1890 he'd kept hidden away in his Virginia home since 1955. He received it from an art collector and decided to pass it on to the National Gallery of Art.
