WHO report: Alcohol kills 1 person every 10 seconds

WHO Report: Alcohol Kills 1 Person Every 10 Seconds

It's a pretty staggering statistic, but according to the World Health Organization, it's true. One person dies every ten seconds due to alcohol.

BBC: "The World Health Organisation says alcohol abuse kills more than three million people every year and it's called on governments to do more to reduce harmful drinking."

KTTV: "That's more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined. So this includes drunk driving, alcohol induced violence and all the diseases and disorders associated with alcohol."

Released Monday, the report says alcohol contributes to about 7.6 percent of all men's deaths and 4 percent of women's deaths. There's also evidence alcohol use among women might be increasing. (Via Flickr / Edwin Land)

WHO reports less than 40 percent of people drink worldwide. But, those who do, and are aged 15 years or older, drink an average of 17 liters of pure alcohol annually. That averages out to about 6.2 liters of pure alcohol per person every year. (Via Flickr / Kimery Davis)

The report also found about 16 percent of people partake in heavy episodic drinking - better known as binge drinking. (Via Flickr / B Duss)

There's actually not much good news in the report. WHO sent it out in hopes of drawing the attention of governments worldwide to help combat this issue.

Norman Giesbrecht from Canada's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health spoke with CTV and called the report very important and timely.

"Often it's considered to be sort of a minor problem and there's lots of jokes about drunkenness and about heavy drinking and I think we need to be much closer attention to alcohol and the damage it does."

According to WebMD, heavy alcohol consumption can result in a variety of different medical conditions including liver, neurological and cardiovascular disease.

And so are cigarettes! If the government is making money off of something it's okay! Public health comes in second place.

Yet Booze is still legal and Marijuana is not in alot of states, except for medical. Growing up and partying. I realized that my friends who drank more then smoked were the real ********. Most of us who smoked weed weren't violent controlling douchebags that beat their girlfriends on a daily basis like the drunks because they were pathetic losers who had a control freak power trip and had to take their lives out on someone else. I would just as soon drive on a road full of stoners then a bunch of people drinking also. All the bullshit they have feed Aemrica about how bad pot is just alot of propaganda horseshit to keep it illegal. I know doctors, lawyers, pharmacists, and other professionals including Judges who would rather see weed smoked then people boozing. Because most of the boozers they have dealt with are violent ******** with their heads up their collective asses.

Why was the potent, dangerous, destructive, and addictive drug, alcohol excluded from the so called "war on drugs"? Because drunks write, administer, and enforce drug laws. To end this corruption, demand that your federal politician acknowledge any and all alcohol consumption and demand to know why they are using alcohol. Then demand to know why they are not doing anything to eliminate parking lots for consume on premise alcohol dispensaries. You will find that your feral politicians are unable to confront these issues because they are not sober enough to write drug laws.

because the Alcohol and Tobacco lobby own more polititians than the Marijuana lobby
the same is true about the pharmacy lobby, the more money they spend the more polititians they can buy

The State and/or Government could charge a consumption tax on marijuana. I do believe in the not so distant future when the government legalizes marijuana as some States already allow it.. The government will write a book of growing laws and tax laws.. Wait until after November 2014 elections.

Not to mention the "ripple" effect within the alcoholic dysfunctional family. The alcoholic family starts other addictions to deal with the practicing drunk, ie overeating, smoking cigarettes profusely, workaholism to avoid being home, terminal co-dependency, chronic depression, and on it goes. Alcoholism, a family disease, everybody gets sick.

Staggering. Alcohol kills someone every ten seconds. In spite of the death toll, it's legal. Marijuana has no record of killing anyone, except when the police show up. In spite of that, a person can still be locked up for life for possessing marijuana. I would like to see the police raid a Budweiser plant, screaming for everyone to "git on the ground". If marijuana had a history of killing people like alcohol does, there would be tanks in the streets, going door to door to eradicate it.

and this is to say nothing of the other people killed by alcohol second-hand, harmed, tormented, and ad their lives ruined, plus just having to put up with offensive and obnoxious behavior.
