WHO report: Alcohol kills 1 person every 10 seconds

WHO Report: Alcohol Kills 1 Person Every 10 Seconds

It's a pretty staggering statistic, but according to the World Health Organization, it's true. One person dies every ten seconds due to alcohol.

BBC: "The World Health Organisation says alcohol abuse kills more than three million people every year and it's called on governments to do more to reduce harmful drinking."

KTTV: "That's more than AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combined. So this includes drunk driving, alcohol induced violence and all the diseases and disorders associated with alcohol."

Released Monday, the report says alcohol contributes to about 7.6 percent of all men's deaths and 4 percent of women's deaths. There's also evidence alcohol use among women might be increasing. (Via Flickr / Edwin Land)

WHO reports less than 40 percent of people drink worldwide. But, those who do, and are aged 15 years or older, drink an average of 17 liters of pure alcohol annually. That averages out to about 6.2 liters of pure alcohol per person every year. (Via Flickr / Kimery Davis)

The report also found about 16 percent of people partake in heavy episodic drinking - better known as binge drinking. (Via Flickr / B Duss)

There's actually not much good news in the report. WHO sent it out in hopes of drawing the attention of governments worldwide to help combat this issue.

Norman Giesbrecht from Canada's Centre for Addiction and Mental Health spoke with CTV and called the report very important and timely.

"Often it's considered to be sort of a minor problem and there's lots of jokes about drunkenness and about heavy drinking and I think we need to be much closer attention to alcohol and the damage it does."

According to WebMD, heavy alcohol consumption can result in a variety of different medical conditions including liver, neurological and cardiovascular disease.

IF WE WANTED A HEALTHY SOCIETY, MANY CHANGES COULD BE MADE...EXCEPT FOR THE FACT, IT WOULD RUIN THE ECONOMY. BUT THEN...THE ECONOMY STINKS ANYWAY!!!!!!

All drugs kill. Pot kills; brain cells, causes laziness and memory loss over time, can occur. Pot is only good eaten and not cooked. Yet we heat it and smoke it. It is no longer helpful

It's simply a matter of dosage. Even water is toxic if consumed to excess. Two drinks a day extends life expectancy. If a little is good, a little is good; more is not necessarily better. The world is seldom black and white.

Study after study has shown that moderate drinking (meaning no more than one drink per day for a woman and no more than two drinks per day for a man) can reduce heart attack risk. On the other hand, people who have had or may be prone to certain cancers, such as breast and head and neck cancers, should abstain from any alcohol. A standard drink is defined as 12 ounces of beer, 5 ounces of wine, or 1-1/2 ounces of 80-proof spirits. I teach this topic at a medical school. And I don't drink - it's a choice that I made, mainly because of the calories involved as well as the fact that I simply don't care for the taste. Not everyone who drinks, even daily, is an alcoholic. There are various stages that occur before alcoholism is diagnosed.

For many adults alcohol is their "drug-of-choice" merely because it's legal and was the only socially acceptable form of inebriation.

Plenty of a holes out there committing other crimes - hate to disappoint you but none of them will lose their jobs due to legalizing pot. Just how much weed have you smoked today anyway?

What baffles me is the alcohol producers share no responsibility for all these deaths? I guess their contributions to the major political parties are current and obviously suffice!

Tobacco industry contributed far more politically and public opinion got them anyway

I believe the tobacco industry also fell behind or failed to contribute enough mula to the major political parties which helped their temporary demise. If one considers marijuana a form of tobacco, the industry will be making a comeback. Colorado and a few other states have already legalized it and the Feds will soon do the same..

They did that, and people are still abusing it, getting so stoned they don't know who there wife is anymore and shooting her (this just happened in Colorado).

Now I have no problem with marijuana, but this story has NOTHING to do with marijuana, so why would you even bring it up? You're just saying that one thing is worse by comparison.

The bus example is coming with THC contents what they are today and use dramatically rising. Only a matter of time so lets go the other way, leave weed illegal and move to make alcohol illegal as well. Far too many irresponsible users of both substances out there.
