Mich. mom pays off school balances after son denied lunch
When Michigan teen Dominic Gant told his mom Amanda Keown that he was denied school lunch due to a negative balance, WWMT says his mom took matters into her own hands.
"Cafeteria workers took away her child's lunch because he owed less than $5 on his school account."
"She decided to pay the overdue balances on every student's account."
The high school junior told WXMI he felt humiliated.
"It was really embarrassing, especially in front of the whole lunchroom."
But Keown was not about to let the school off the hook. She told WXMI she was appalled when she found out her son was forced to go hungry, so she called the school for an explanation.
"'When do you say no more?' and I said 'There shouldn't be a line. I don't want another kid going through what my son went through.'"
Keown made sure of that. Last week, HLN reports she paid a little less than $100 to settle all the students' overdue balances.
The school's principal said Gant should never have been denied lunch and students are allowed to pay on another day.
