Mich. mom pays off school balances after son denied lunch

Mich. Mom Pays Off School Balances After Son Denied Lunch

When Michigan teen Dominic Gant told his mom Amanda Keown that he was denied school lunch due to a negative balance, WWMT says his mom took matters into her own hands.

"Cafeteria workers took away her child's lunch because he owed less than $5 on his school account."
"She decided to pay the overdue balances on every student's account."

The high school junior told WXMI he felt humiliated.

"It was really embarrassing, especially in front of the whole lunchroom."

But Keown was not about to let the school off the hook. She told WXMI she was appalled when she found out her son was forced to go hungry, so she called the school for an explanation.

"'When do you say no more?' and I said 'There shouldn't be a line. I don't want another kid going through what my son went through.'"

Keown made sure of that. Last week, HLN reports she paid a little less than $100 to settle all the students' overdue balances.

The school's principal said Gant should never have been denied lunch and students are allowed to pay on another day.

No Ms. Mary, send your check on time. Or get your butt and make them lunch.

Am I the only one who is done hearing about cafeteria lunchrooms who are asking to be paid for services provided? Why is it that so many parents are "upset" over these children being denied? Where is the parent that is ASHAMED that they forgot to pay and the child has to deal with the parents shortcomings.
My school district has folded and allows EVERY child a meal. Regardless of status, race, grade ... we feed all! COME AND GET IT ... by the way, our negative student balances for this year alone exceeds $60, 000 more than my annual income!
Here is something else to consider, a little food for thought if you will ... PAY the bill and maybe just maybe food services can get a better variety, better quality of food for those who arent stealing

disappointing that the cafeteria people would deny a child lunch for any amount. how could they possible think it was okay to let a young boy go hungry,,for all they know it could be the only meal this child gets,,,,i guess compassion and kindness is disappearing in our society in general....

I wish the Mother paying the bill would have humiliated the cafeteria workers too.

I think she did by going to the news. Now all of their family and friends, neighbors and other parents know what they did. That would have been humiliating to me. But I would have paid it from my own pocket before letting a child go hungry. Shame on them. NOT a good example for our children.

Hopefully this kid learned to carry a billfold with a few bucks in it for emergencies because momma may forget him again.

When the students have a negative balance, how often do the school officials notify the parents? I'm certainly a believer in paying your way, but things happen. The electric company will give you notification if they are about to shut off your lights, so why can't the school give notice before they cut off the kid's lunch?

Right, and unlike in the school, the electric company doesn't require you to GUESS how much you will use and then penalize you if you miscalculate. Most schools realize this and give you a few day's grace to get it paid.

Why should the school extend credit indefinitely? Children should learn at an early age the penalty for being a deadbeat.
