Jones fined after sending tweet about Michael Sam

BY STEVEN WINE
AP SPORTS WRITER

MIAMI (AP) -- Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones was fined an undisclosed amount Sunday and will undergo educational training after sending a negative tweet about Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be selected in the NFL draft.

Shortly after the St. Louis Rams took Sam in the seventh round Saturday, Jones tweeted "OMG" and "Horrible." The tweets were taken down a short time later.

Jones apologized for his comments Sunday and described them as inappropriate. The Dolphins said Jones has been excused from all team activities until he completes training related to his comments.

Dolphins' Jones Apologizes For Sam Tweets

"We were disappointed to read Don's tweets," coach Joe Philbin said in a statement. "They were inappropriate and unacceptable, and we regret the negative impact these comments had on such an important weekend for the NFL. We met with Don today about respect, discrimination and judgment. These comments are not consistent with the values and standards of our program."

The Dolphins reacted swiftly to Jones' comments in the wake of the team's bullying scandal last year, which embarrassed the NFL and prompted a nationwide debate about workplace harassment.

Jones said he regretted that his tweets took away from Sam's "draft moment."

"I remember last year when I was drafted in the seventh round, and all of the emotions and happiness I felt when I received the call that gave me an opportunity to play for an NFL team, and I wish him all the best in his NFL career," Jones said in a statement. "I am committed to represent the values of the Miami Dolphins organization, and appreciate the opportunity I have been given to do so going forward."

Jones' agent, Chris Martin, could not be reached Sunday for comment.

Pathetic. Have your own views about homosexuality, but free speech is far more important. Are we going to become robots to political correctness? The media was part to blame as for 10 minutes they played and replayed the cake smashing and kissing which I can never recall being done by any previous draft pick. It wasn't professional and should have been on the LOGO channel and not on ESPN. It is the in your face aspect that is deplorable and obviously staged. Jones comment was not extensive, but very brief and frankly insignificant - it is amazing how thin skinned the team chose to make it a big issue. 1984 has arrived.

How come sterling is not merely "fined" an undisclosed amount and ordered to undergo "educational training" after sending a negative mssg?

Jones has the right to say whatever he wants and there are a multitude of people who agree with him.

What's the big deal. There have been many football players throughout the years that wore more lace than leather in their private time. So this guy is just open about it. Life goes on.

Hi May 13 2014 at 11:21 AM

Now people have to respect sin.... And have to be educated to do so. I have lost my taste for football. They give gays their rights and take our Freedom of speech away. After what they did to Sterling one has to wonder why this man was not banned from football as well as the fine.... Something wrong about that too? Wake up!!!

"they do and say what ever they feel like saying", OMG that is so right. We have the freedom of speech and that is all there is too it. No coach, No nfl, No nba, nobody should be fining anyone for expressing their views. You certainly try to shove yours down our throats, which is consistent to your lifestyle....

Now you can be fined and punished for your thoughts. It is apparently now illegal to have a dissenting opnion. This can only end very badly. Jones should sue.

Look at the Sterling case;though he should not say such things;one has to know that he said them in the privacy of his own home!!!! It was recorded without his permission and leaked to the media now he is forced out of the NBA!!! Be careful what you say in the privacy of your home!!!!
