NBA picks Dick Parsons as interim Clippers CEO

NEW YORK (AP) - The NBA has chosen Dick Parsons, a former Citigroup chairman and former Time Warner chairman and CEO, as interim CEO of the Los Angeles Clippers.

Parsons will oversee the franchise while the league tries to force owner Donald Sterling to sell it following his lifetime ban for making racist remarks.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said Friday in a statement that Parsons "will bring extraordinary leadership and immediate stability to the Clippers organization."

"Dick's credentials as a proven chief executive speak for themselves and I am extremely grateful he accepted this responsibility," Silver added.

With Sterling banned from anything to do with the team or league, and team President Andy Roeser on an indefinite leave of absence, the league and Clippers worked together to find someone to lead the organization along with coach Doc Rivers.

"Like most Americans, I have been deeply troubled by the pain the Clippers' team, fans and partners have endured," Parsons said. "A lifelong fan of the NBA, I am firmly committed to the values and principles it is defending, and I completely support Adam's leadership in navigating the challenges facing the team and the league."

Parsons is currently a senior advisor at Providence Equity Partners and sits on the board of directors for the Commission on Presidential Debates. He has also been on President Barack Obama's economic advisory team.

A graduate of the University of Hawaii, Parsons earned a law degree from Albany Law School in 1971 and became a staff lawyer for New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller. He moved to Washington when Rockefeller was appointed vice president, and also worked closely with President Gerald Ford.

Parsons left the legal field in 1988 to become president, then chairman and CEO of Dime Bancorp, Inc. He was Time Warner chairman and CEO from 2002-08, then chairman of Citigroup from 2009-12.

He will represent the franchise in owners meetings while the league tries to work out the team's ownership situation.

A three-fourths vote of owners is required to force Sterling to sell the team he has owned since 1981. His estranged wife, Shelly, wants to keep her 50 percent ownership stake in the team, her lawyer said Thursday, and Silver said so far the ban only applies to Donald Sterling.

While that potential fight goes on, the Clippers are trying to stay focused on the playoffs following their most successful regular season ever. They are tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder entering Game 3 of their Western Conference semifinal series.

"The Clippers are a resilient organization with a brilliant coach and equally talented and dedicated athletes and staff who have demonstrated great strength of character during a time of adversity," Parsons said. "I am honored to be asked to work with them, build on their values and accomplishments, and help them open a new, inspiring era for their team."

Hire all the lawyers you want but first check the NBA rules and code of conduct for owners.

Lots of interesting comments but so many are missing the point. This is not a freedom of speech issue It has to do with violation of league policy governing the conduct of a team owner. It doesn't matter if you own the team, your conduct and actions must follow guide lines set forth by the league and that ALL owners are aware of. If 75% of the owners agree that his conduct was/is detrimental to the league he can be forced to sell. I'm sure the NFL, MLB and NHL have similar rules. Now he can fight this in the courts but I doubt he will win. He cannot use freedom of speech as a defense.

Big lesson for prejudice it does not work in this society anymore I for one am so pleased to see the support. I hear gun advocates and bigots justify in their minds their cause with no common sense only support for selfish causes it's so refreshing to see us all, every race and color, supporting each other for our Children and their future. As far as Sterling I didn't hear him say anything until last week he has a team and a job how can any of his players support him? And by the way, I'm white. I have respect for everyone who shows the qualities to deserve it.

You are wrong prejudice does work but only coming from non- whites - if you are white all you can do is not say anything because if the PC police don't like what they think you said they will come after you
and steal what little the gov't has left you for not bowing to their idea of what is politically correct

This should really be interest.

He's not selling.

Who is Parsons to represent, the NBA, the Franchise, or the Property of the owner Consortium.

He has no authority. What's going on here?

They cannot force the property to be sold. The NBA is not a government and the right of Public Domain is not relivent here. The NBA is a "CLUB".

What's going on?

Has everyone lost their minds?

I see a huge lawsuit coming.

Why would Dick Parsons even get involved, besides being a member the correct tribe? Is that all that at stake here?

Was it mandatory that a Black Man take over the team? Why was Parsons conciderd the best man for the job? There were no other candidates qualified to take over the team.
Hey Sterling, don't let them take your team. There isn't one member of your team who hasn't made a rarcial re-mark at one time or another. You need to fight and fight hard to keep your team. If you have to sell the team, Sell it to a Japanese or any foreighn country. All this is BS Don't let them pull this crap on you....
