Dad Arrested After Outrage Over Daughter's 'Porno' Homework

Dad Arrested After Outrage Over Daughter's 'Porno' Homework

A New Hampshire father was outraged over what he called his 9th grade daughter's "pornographic" homework assignment, but police say his reaction went too far.

WTSP reports this is William Baer being taken out of a school board meeting in handcuffs. That's after he voiced his concerns about his daughter's assignment to read Jodi Picoult's novel "Nineteen Minutes."

"I have a little problem with the book," he said.

According to parents, it's full of sexual content unacceptable for high school freshmen to be reading.

The book is about a student who is bullied and then goes on a shooting rampage. In one part, there's a very graphic sex scene.

It reads, "He sank his teeth into her shoulder. He pinned her hands over her head and ground his hips against hers. She could feel his erection, hot against her stomach." (Via Jodi Picoult / "Nineteen Minutes")

WBZ mentions "It reads like a transcript for a triple X porno movie. We had no notice of it whatsoever, no written notice, no verbal, nothing."

So Baer and a few other parents voiced their opinions at the Gilford High School's school board meeting, saying they should've been informed that their kids were reading the book. And when Baer went over his allotted two minutes to speak, police arrested him.

Now, the Gilford School District will be taking action. According to a statement from the school board, it plans to include a notification that requires parents to accept controversial material rather than opt out.

Author Jodi Picoult says she's glad this incident started a debate, but she doesn't think there should be this much fuss over her book.

She tells the New Hampshire Union-Leader all three of her kids read the book in high school. Picoult said the goal is to teach people about tolerance, bullying and gun violence.

"The fact that people are reacting to the book means it's striking home. When you push someone on these issues, that's when change occurs."

As for Baer, CBS reports if he is convicted of disorderly conduct he could face a fine up to $1,200.

I'm sure glad my grandchildren aren't growing up in that "tolerant" community.

Me too! They'd probably have a better chance of learning something about "intolerance"!!

I think the father and the other parents have a strong point. The book's "point" may be quite good, but what's the need for this kind of sexual description in a book a freshman is supposed to read? Granted, many high school students already know about sex, but couldn't it have been written in a slightly more restrained way? I suspect the author was just trying to get attention, but I suggest she might follow some of the imaginative scene-writing by some of the (horrors!) romance writers. The same idea is there, but in more subtle ways.

Or you can leave the educating to the educators or go to a private school instead.

You're well aware that nobody has ever convinced the people of New Hampshire of being inbred.........when it comes to the blue states however, especially Kentucky and Tennessee......

Nobody has accused them of being inbred that is (not "convinced"). Screwing one's own cousin is a GOPBelief

“The best way to take control over a people and control them utterly is to take a little of their freedom at a time, to erode rights by a thousand tiny and almost imperceptible reductions. In this way, the people will not see those rights and freedoms being removed until past the point at which these changes cannot be reversed.”

High school kids with erections? No, surely this does not happen. It can't be! At that age it was virtually my natural state. LOL!

This is just wrong. A parent should have the right to decide if they want their children exposed to things like this. It isn't about tolerance, it is about soft-porn, and I too would object and would NOT agree to this policy. And arresting him for going over the 2 minute limit?? Really wrong!
