Dad Arrested After Outrage Over Daughter's 'Porno' Homework

Dad Arrested After Outrage Over Daughter's 'Porno' Homework

A New Hampshire father was outraged over what he called his 9th grade daughter's "pornographic" homework assignment, but police say his reaction went too far.

WTSP reports this is William Baer being taken out of a school board meeting in handcuffs. That's after he voiced his concerns about his daughter's assignment to read Jodi Picoult's novel "Nineteen Minutes."

"I have a little problem with the book," he said.

According to parents, it's full of sexual content unacceptable for high school freshmen to be reading.

The book is about a student who is bullied and then goes on a shooting rampage. In one part, there's a very graphic sex scene.

It reads, "He sank his teeth into her shoulder. He pinned her hands over her head and ground his hips against hers. She could feel his erection, hot against her stomach." (Via Jodi Picoult / "Nineteen Minutes")

WBZ mentions "It reads like a transcript for a triple X porno movie. We had no notice of it whatsoever, no written notice, no verbal, nothing."

So Baer and a few other parents voiced their opinions at the Gilford High School's school board meeting, saying they should've been informed that their kids were reading the book. And when Baer went over his allotted two minutes to speak, police arrested him.

Now, the Gilford School District will be taking action. According to a statement from the school board, it plans to include a notification that requires parents to accept controversial material rather than opt out.

Author Jodi Picoult says she's glad this incident started a debate, but she doesn't think there should be this much fuss over her book.

She tells the New Hampshire Union-Leader all three of her kids read the book in high school. Picoult said the goal is to teach people about tolerance, bullying and gun violence.

"The fact that people are reacting to the book means it's striking home. When you push someone on these issues, that's when change occurs."

As for Baer, CBS reports if he is convicted of disorderly conduct he could face a fine up to $1,200.

your right there should be no 2 minute rule. One person should be allowed to talk all night and other parents should forego their right to speak while listening to one person go on treating the meeting like a filibuster.

Picoult said the goal is to teach people about tolerance, bullying and gun violence.
.....So why add the pornography to the book?

Arrested? WHY? Voicing dissent in this day and age is no longer protected by the 1st Amendment? Just shows what lengths nobama will go to to protect his kingdom. Wonder what is next. Housing his storm troopers in our homes?

So it is OK for a school to require KIDS to read books with pornographic content but it is NOT OK for a father to go over his allotted 2 minutes in a school board meeting!!! What is the matter with this country any more!!!!! This is outrageous! The author wanted to teach people about tolerance, bullying and gun violence. They why did she have to throw in such graphic sexual content? What is she trying to really teach? Heaven help this country.

Absolutely rediculous. Yes, kids see stuff on TV and in the movies but parents do get a change to keep them from seeing that crap. Accept controversial material? That is really getting dumb and dumber.

This DOES sound like porn. WHY are school kids reading this? Aren't they already horny enough?

This makes me so angry. I hope these parents fight tooth and nail. No one has the right to decide that my underage child can be exposed to things I don't want them exposed to. This book shouldn't even be allowed in the school library. If she had wanted to write a book about bullying and violence awareness, she could have done that without throwing in the violent, forced sex scenes also. The author has the right to do as she pleases with her own kids, but the school telling these parents they can decide what's best for the children??? No man. I really hope these parents raise holy hell on this school.

I am a teacher. There is NO REASON children should be reading a book with such statement. I would have protested, as well. I hope this father and others make signs and march in front of board meetings for a long time. I'm far from a prude, but I oppose books that have such content.

What "erection"? Then obviously you don't read literature. Have you ever read Shakespeare?

“’Yeah,’ he groaned, and he pushed her thighs apart. And then suddenly Matt was inside her, pumping her so hard that she scooted backward on the carpet, burning the backs of her legs.”

That was the part that was objected to, not "erection".

Have you read the book? It was published at least seven years ago. I have no problem if a parent objects to reading materials. That particular passage is hardly pornographic. If that were the case, we never would have read Romeo and Juliet.
