Circus set to resume performances after accident

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus is preparing for the first performance of its "Legends" show since an aerial accident sent eight acrobats plummeting to the ground in Rhode Island.

The circus opens in Hartford, Connecticut, on Thursday night and runs through the weekend.

Producer Nicole Feld plans an afternoon news conference to discuss the accident and changes to the show.

The "human chandelier" stunt, in which performers hang by their hair from a suspended apparatus, won't be performed.

Acrobats Dayana Costa, Julissa Segrera and Stefany Neves remain in serious condition at Rhode Island Hospital in Providence.

They were among those injured Sunday when a clip at the top of the apparatus snapped, dropping them 20-feet to the ground. Officials haven't determined why that clip failed.

What is with these people. Circus animals are abused beyond most people's wildest nightmares and yet these droves of patrons continue to support this.

So now more young kids can be traumatized by the performers possible getting killed right before their eyes.

They are still "The Greatest Show On Earth" with the best family performers in the world.

answer me this .. what do you tell the 'kiddies' in your 'family' when you go to the Greatest Show on Earth? Do you tell them that the elephants lined up to be taken from their natural habitat to become part of a circus act? What do you tell them about the bullhooks used to make them perform unnatural acts .. the same bullhooks that are now preventing them from bringing their Great Show to Los Angeles because of an ordinance passed disallowing their use? If humans want to voluntarily perform, that's their business. If animals are held captive and made to wear silly costumes and perform unnatural acts for our amusement by means of torture, that's OUR business. As long as Ringling Bros. uses animal acts, they are the WORST Show on Earth, and we need to redefine what "family" entertainment is!

I tell them how much better there are treated now. If left in their "natural habitat", they are killed for their tusks, horribly treated, and forced to work endless, tiring hours in deplorable conditions.

I tell my children the truth. The elephants are well cared for, live longer than they would in the wild, and the hooks don't hurt them a bit.

Pray that I get a billion dollars, please. What's that old saying? "Pray in one hand and s**t in the other and see which fills up the fastest."

I know Monica Lewinski is in the news just now, but that is not a polite way to speak about her.

For rock-solid video proof of how circus owners have dealt in the past with animals that weren't obeying or cowering to their trainers, go to Youtube and search "topsy the elephant." Bring a tissue.

I don't know who wrote today's article opening this page, but a local Rhode Island TV broadcast this morning featured a news conference of four physicians, and that only three acrobats had been discharged, and four remained hospitalized in serious condition with multiple broken bones, a punctured liver, head trauma, and that two women had spinal cord injuries and with a very limited prognosis for their recovery.

It is time that OSHA require life nets beneath all these dangerous acts.

Just what we need, more government regulation. Anybody would do these acts with a safety net,the risk is what makes these people special. When theres no risk there is no fear, no fear= no focus, easy distraction, less strategy less motive to get it perfect everytime.

Santuary are a safe place where the animals can go live a happy life FREE from the circus and hollywoods cameras and so on.....

the animals this circus uses for your "entertainment" have to endure pain and suffering beatings and circumstances that would be considered war crimes were they human...I have never gone..or ever will go to the circus as an adult.....

Apparently many others don't agree with you, or they would be out of business.

This discussion is not about the animals, it is about the people that were hurt in a fall. It is hard for me to believe that uninJured animals can get more compassion from people than the acrobats that are still suffering. Shame on you people.
