Discovery made alongside rare goblin shark sparking excitement

Scientists are still shocked about the rare goblin shark pulled out of the Gulf the other week, but it's not just the shark that has scientists so excited.

Lying among a pile of shrimp are several large isopods, leading researchers to believe that the fisherman may have stumbled upon a small
ecosystem.

While giant isopods, which are similar to shrimp or crabs, aren't rare, what's interesting is the amount of isopods that were caught in one net.

Scientists Spot Something Interesting Beside Rare Goblin Shark

In an email to Chron, marine biologist Andrew Thaler said, "They're usually spread pretty thin and only occur in abundance around a food source. So, I hypothesized that the trawl might have passed over a whalefall, which would also explain the goblin shark."

A whale fall is exactly what it sounds like -- where a whale falls after it dies. Deep sea organisms are able to feed off of a decaying whale for up to a decade.

And there's a reason why this is exciting.

Chron.com notes that, 'back in 2007, a new species of sea anemone was discovered living among the bones of a whale found off the coast of Monterey, California, according to Livescience.com.'

Thaler tweeted, "I'll bet you all my Star Wars cards that, if you run [a remotely operated vehicle] along that trawl line, you'll find a huge carcass."

Hell folks, we kill babies by the thousands or is it millions by now, yet you folks don't give a **** because it makes you folks uncomfortable to think that those embryos are real people, but you folks want to have your fun without accountability and so you call them just tissue and deny God so that makes it easier to live with yourself, But God is still watching.

Really Ed, bet you have injoyed your "fun" and used protection a thousand times!!! Using a condom could also be called "killing life", and it is in some religious beliefs in America!!! So where do you draw the line? Just for all humanity to practice abstinence? Wake up and smell the coffee! And accountability? Don't you think this "God" you see as "watching" also sees that after those humans are born, a society, who insisted on their personal interpretation of a 3,000 year old society's history of their society is one we should follow 4 to 5 thousand years later, fail to give food, medical care, homes, clothes, schooling, and fail to protect them from sexual, emotional, and physical abuse. IThe most important pronouncements in that book "care for the poor, the children, the old, infirm, and sick". is what a "humane" society would do without making a political football out of it. When life begins is a religious issue; different in different religions. Not a matter for politics.

Really, Ed? You read an article about a goblin shark and that drives you to an abortion rant? You are entitled to your opinion - but why don't you put it in a forum discussing birth control or abortion?

God only knows what is growing down under the sea after all the BP/Exxon mess-ups. The worst thing is that in the last 100 or so years we have managed to ruin this planet for next generations to come. Now they are looking into invading other planets. We will have McDonald wrappers/plastic bottles falling down from Mercury or Uranus or is it going to be the Moon?

Has anyone else noticed that the shark may have another set of eyes. It looks to be on both sides of the sharks in the pictures. There are two oval eye shaped circles on both sides right above the teeth near its lower nose

This means that a trawler scraped the seabed. That means it disturbed the ecosystem. Trawling is the most destructive and indiscriminate form of fishing method. That's why it picks up anything and everything, and most sea life that is not profit-worthy is just tossed back if it isn't already destroyed. In many places trawling has been banned it is so bad. It is the equivalent of if you dragged a rake over your body to remove some hair......
