Mom sees daughter for first time after major weight loss

Mother's Weight-Loss Journey Inspires Daughter To Get Healthy

Abigail Lowe, a mother and grandmother, has an inspiring weight-loss story that encouraged her daughter Miley Daly to make a change. Until Tuesday, NBC reports Abigail hadn't seen the new Miley.

On her grandson's first birthday, Abigail decided she needed to make a lifestyle change to live long enough to see the little boy grow.

"I wanted to be the best grandmother that I could be."

Abigail had weight-loss surgery and now stays active to keep off the 100 pounds she lost eight years ago.

According to the Mayo Clinic, weight-loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, helps patients reduce their weight and also lowers the risk of obesity-related medical problems.

Abigail's surgery and health kick inspired her daughter Miley to get healthy too.

Miley told NBC Abigail was thrilled when Miley decided to follow her mother's footsteps and undergo bariatric surgery.

Abigail was ecstatic to finally see her daughter after Miley's weight loss.

The Today show posted Abigail's priceless reaction to its Twitter account with the hashtag "MomsTheWord." As of now, NBC says Miley has lost 146 pounds and says her new look is one big thank you to her mom.

"I'm just so happy I can share it with her."

The last time the two saw each other was right after Miley's surgery last fall.

The American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery reports that large population studies have found weight-loss surgery can lower the risk of death for people who are obese. One study even found that "up to an 89 percent greater reduction in mortality throughout a 5-year observation period for individuals who had bariatric surgery when compared to those who did not."

For Miley and Abigail, this reunion was perfectly timed with Mother's Day just around the corner.

The Today show surprised Miley tons of new clothes in her new, smaller size and a shopping spree at Macy's.

IT DID NOT WORK FOR ME. DOES NOT ALWAYS WORK. DOCTORS DONT TALK ABOUT THE FAILURES. JUST WOUND UP WITH A VERY BIG SCAR. OH AND BLAMES THE FAILURES ON THE PATIENT. NOT THE PATIENTS FAULT.

SOME PEOPLE NEVER LOOSE THE WEIGHT. SOME LOSE THE WEIGHT AND GAIN IT BACK.

If you're going to force us to watch videos instead of reading the story with our own eyes, at least SHOW US THE FRIGGIN VIDEO! We don't want to watch a video that has nothing but a reporter reading the story to us. WTH!

Good for her but why the need to contact the media and show this to strangers....approval-seeking behavior ?

So women don't want their bodies to be an issue when they are fat, but want to be at the center of attention when not so fat. Got it.

I lost 114 pounds by cutting carbs out of my diet. Bariatric surgery is just another way that doctors have dreamed up to make money from the weak-willed.

How hypocritical of you after having been so over weight yourself with issues to now call others weak-willed when you obviously had little to none yourself at a time in your life. for some bariatric surgery gives them the will and saves them from dying especially with hundreds to lose. You obviously have no medical knowledge. However. congrats on the weightloss,, but encourage others and don't criticize what you know nothing about.

Hmm. You're right. Having risky surgery and then dieting is the easy way out. Are you confusing liposuction with bariatric surgery?

As usual yak, yak , yak and almost no video of the people involved. Disjointed and boring. Please learn how to report the new in an interesting manner.
