Mother's Weight-Loss Journey Inspires Daughter To Get Healthy

Abigail Lowe, a mother and grandmother, has an inspiring weight-loss story that encouraged her daughter Miley Daly to make a change. Until Tuesday, NBC reports Abigail hadn't seen the new Miley.

On her grandson's first birthday, Abigail decided she needed to make a lifestyle change to live long enough to see the little boy grow.

"I wanted to be the best grandmother that I could be."

Abigail had weight-loss surgery and now stays active to keep off the 100 pounds she lost eight years ago.

According to the Mayo Clinic, weight-loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, helps patients reduce their weight and also lowers the risk of obesity-related medical problems.

Abigail's surgery and health kick inspired her daughter Miley to get healthy too.

Miley told NBC Abigail was thrilled when Miley decided to follow her mother's footsteps and undergo bariatric surgery.

Abigail was ecstatic to finally see her daughter after Miley's weight loss.

The Today show posted Abigail's priceless reaction to its Twitter account with the hashtag "MomsTheWord."

As of now, NBC says Miley has lost 146 pounds and says her new look is one big thank you to her mom.

"I'm just so happy I can share it with her."

The last time the two saw each other was right after Miley's surgery last fall.

The American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery reports that large population studies have found weight-loss surgery can lower the risk of death for people who are obese. One study even found that "up to an 89 percent greater reduction in mortality throughout a 5-year observation period for individuals who had bariatric surgery when compared to those who did not."

For Miley and Abigail, this reunion was perfectly timed with Mother's Day just around the corner.

The Today show surprised Miley tons of new clothes in her new, smaller size and a shopping spree at Macy's.
