Settlement reached in guardianship of Ariel Winter

LOS ANGELES (AP) - "Modern Family" actress Ariel Winter will keep living with her adult sister after an agreement was reached Monday with the mother of Winter in a long-running guardianship dispute.

The agreement was reached just before a trial was set to begin on who would care for the 16-year-old actress.

Winter's mother Chrisoula Workman agreed to drop her objections to the guardianship if her daughter could watch a video montage of family photos before court adjourned.

Superior Court Judge Daniel Murphy agreed, and Winter and her sister Shanelle Gray sat in court and dabbed their eyes with a tissues as photos of their childhood played. Winter left court without speaking, but Murphy said it would be up to her to decide whether she would visit with her mother.

Winter has been living with Gray since 2012, when a temporary guardianship was established amid allegations that Workman was subjecting her daughter to physical and emotional abuse.

Another judge previously said an initial report by child protective services found evidence of emotional abuse, but claims of physical abuse were deemed inconclusive. Subsequent reports have not been described in court.

"I have never abused my daughter," Workman reiterated Monday.

Winter's father will have control of the actress' finances and will have to make reports to the court. Murphy said he would retain jurisdiction over the actress and her care until she turns 18.

After the proceedings, Gray and Workman issued a joint statement saying, "The family has moved beyond the conflict."

The statement said they were working toward reconciliation and thanked well-wishers.

Several supporters of Chrisoula Workman who attended the proceedings applauded the settlement announcement.

Winter, who has been acting since age 7, plays Alex Dunphy on the popular and critically acclaimed ABC series. She also has appeared in movies such as "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang."

Winter's brother, actor Jimmy Workman, had asked that the courtroom be closed while the video montage was played, but Murphy refused. Jimmy Workman, who played Pugsley Addams in "The Addams Family" films, excused himself from the courtroom at one point and wept after Murphy formally granted Gray guardianship of his sister.

Guardianship cases in California are public record. Gray's attorneys requested the case and its proceedings be sealed, but a judge has refused. The case was filed under Ariel's birth name, Ariel Workman.

I would have loved to have had the money at that age to stick it to my mother. We girls sure can have issues when our hormones begin to rage. Now it is different and I wish I had listened to my mom, but this girl - legal child really, is giving it back to her mom for daring to try to teach her some restraint and respect. The article says she's 16 now. This started when she was caught having sex with her then 18 year old boyfriend and she was 14 at the time. Her mom threatened and did go to police to report this and the girl retaliated. That is the story. I bet the 'mental abuse' is all the stress our poor little heroine went through worrying about losing her grown up boyfriend and having rules to abide by. The lawyers helped her build a case citing emotional abuse to make it easier to get her in an environment where she doesn't have to listen to some stupid adult who knows nothing about life and real love. Because Ariel is so smart and grown up. It's a shame, really.

I totally agree with you Dollie. I hope her Mother lives long enough to see this girls grandchildren and then maybe Ariel will understand what it is to be a Mother. Eventually, maybe long down the road she will be sorry for the action she took on her Mother.

you know what is a shame? that people who have NOT A CLUE as to what is actually going on feel they have the right to open their big flapping mouths about someone elses life. this is exactly why these herings should be closed. it is NO ONES business what happened in the court or in her home.

And you know this because....? Have you raised a teenage girl, much less one who has been raised in the limelight of the acting environment? It's stressful on even the most perfect parents. Please don't be so quick to judge the mom unless you've walked in her shoes.

Modern Family is an UNwatchable show. In a few years you will see this girl strung out on drugs, broke and maybe even OD'ed. Kids this young should not be in control, it should be the parents.

oh my goodness, if she doesnt want to live with her mother and has not - then why is the court forcing the issue. The girl is old enough to know where she wants to live. I do believe at 16 in Ca you can just do emancipated minor. Get rid of the parents and them butting in her life. They probably just want her money.

I didn't get the opinion that the court is forcing the issue. The judge agreed that she can keep living with her sister.

Has anyone bothered to check the real facts in this case? It makes my skin crawl to read most of these posts. Do you think the judge would have granted guardianship to the adult sister if there wasn't evidence of abuse? Some of you people are absolute scum for your remarks, if that makes you feel better about yourself, I feel sorry for you.

These days a child can get mad at their parents for any little thing and then cry wolf and
get away with it. I refused to go to store one day and my son called the police on me . Boy he is a good story teller. (we had plenty of food. Just not what he wanted) He learned how to manipulate the system real fast. His manipulation of the law wrecked my life. Anything he said no matter how ridicules and out there was believed even with out any proof of his aligations

This is the consequences of a Society which ask GOD please get out form our life. Life with out Values, were materialism and sex is the only thing count. then what for have children's when in short time we have to spend fortunes to go to court so Lawyer and Corrupt Judges get our money and after court we has a parent any way we have to keep carry on our problems any ways because the matter never end in court . End when people understand Court was no necessary and the purpose of life is Love each other. If we has a parent have to be responsible for wherever happen to our children's and they accuse the parent of been abusive because they have been cut in the lie and they have been discipline .....please give a brake
