Man Reunites With Woman He Found Abandoned As Newborn

A man who found a newborn baby abandoned in the woods in Indiana finally got to reunite with her nearly 60 years after he first found her. Dave Hickman sat down with CBS.

In 1955, Dave was just 14 years old. He heard a strange cooing noise in the woods, "so I started walking up the fence, I got on top of the fence, I looked down, and there was a little baby. She was soaking wet. Her lips were blue. She was wrapped in a towel."

The baby, then named Roseann, was adopted a short time later. Hickman said goodbye to her and then spent years looking for her. So all these years later, how was Hickman able to find Roseann, now named Mary Ellen Suey?

The Indianapolis Star reports Hickman spent years trying to track down Suey when he decided to ask a former sheriff for some help back in December. The former sheriff said he interviewed 75 people and went through public records before he could find Suey.

In reaction to the reunion, Suey told the paper: "It's just so nice to meet him and give him a hug and thank him for what he did. If it wasn't for him, I wouldn't be here."

This video from the Palladium-Item shows the reunion between Hickman and Suey - a reunion nearly 60 years in the making. Even the mayor of Richmond, Indiana, came to see the two.

Hickman says Suey will "always be [his] little girl."

Nice to read a happy " not silly" article...God bless the man who took the path that led him to the baby...or she would have been just another statistic of abandonment and death..why this even happens in today's society is beyond me...a mother or anyone can bring an infant up to a certain age..with no repercussions to a fire station or a police department ..so that this exact thing doesn't happen...and yet it still does...sad.

This man truly is a hero for saving this child's life and although it's been 59 years ago this occurred, he has not given up trying to search for her. He was only 14 years old at the time he discovered her and she was out there, wrapped in a wet towel. Whoever this woman's birth mother was probably was very young and couldn't take care of her. But she is very blessed to have been adopted by some family out there and it's just so heartwarming to see both her and her rescuer reunite after all those years.

Clearly this man is her hero....he's now mine too. One other comment was that a 14 year old heard that sound and followed it to find this baby. In today's time, we have an awful lot of 14 year olds who won't put down their games and phones to even go outside. I wonder if a 14 year old who never goes outside of themselves to see the world around would know what to do.............and I am NOT SAYING all 14 year old are strolling through life with their heads in their games. It's a different time, different life style and a self absorbed society than in the "old days." As if what he did wasn't enough, he spent his time and resources for years to find her.......this is a man with a moral compass, doing something far above what many of us would even do. MYSELF included. Thank heavens for the angels that walk among us!!!

I am not certain if this is true for all of the states. But here in Arizona, an individual is permitted to drop a baby off at the entrance or emergency room of any hospital or fire department and not be punished and held liable. Heaven only knows how difficult it must be to have nowhere to go with your child and to have to make this heartbreaking decision and abandon your infant. God bless Mr. Hickman.

Really great story with a beautiful ending for Dave's quest. And Mary Ellen seemed delighted to reconnect with him. Congrats all around! Gee,... a "happy news" story from
Huff... for a change. Must have been like having your teeth extracted, without anesthesia, eh, Huff???

I find it galling all these posts about how wonderful he was for just finding this girl when he was 14 yo. The implication is that he did something heroic while other posters would have killed the baby and buried it. What did people expect him to do?

Hey Mike ... you live in this crappy world. There are a LOT of disgusting, horrible people out there. What do YOU think could have happened if one of THEM found that little baby? Find something truly horrific to "gall" you and shut the hell up. Moron.
