2014 is the opening of the newly refurbished and named $40 million Anna Wintour Costume Center. The annual Gala at the Metropolitan Museum of Art is largely focused on two big names this year: Anna Wintour for the new center, and the work of Charles James, the designer chosen to be the focus of the first exhibit.

Our First Lady, Michelle Obama, was at the unveiling of the new Costume Center this morning. She gave a short speech, starting off: "I'm here today because of Anna Wintour," and cutting the ribbon. She looked lovely in a forest green floral printed Naeem Khan dress. She addressed the students in the crowd, many from FIT, as she spoke of the impact the new center will have on education, saying "you're here because we want you to dream bigger."

Touchingly, the First Lady's speech melted the Vogue editor known for her, well, "icy" demeanor. Wintour got teary eyed as Mrs. Obama spoke.

Most of fashion's elite was in the crowd -- from Oscar de la Renta and Tory Burch to our favorite twins (the Olsens, duh!) -- there to support one of the most influential women in the industry.
