Obama, McHale Bring Down The House At #WHCD

Obama, McHale Bring Down The House At #WHCD

"I am happy to be here, even though I am a little jet-lagged from my trip to Malaysia. The lengths we have to go to to get CNN coverage these days."

Yowch. President Obama was not pulling any punches at this year's White House Correspondents' Dinner. The White House Correspondents' Association is celebrating its centennial anniversary this year, and their annual dinner was an appropriately lavish spectacle.

What began as a small, select gathering of White House journalists in 1921 has transformed into four days of fancy parties and star-studded red carpets, where celebrities, politicians and journalists all gather in D.C. to let their hair down for a weekend.

This year's festivities saw appearances from celebrities like Lupita Nyong'o, Mindy Kaling, and "The Roots" musician Questlove.

But compared to past dinners, the guest list was a little light on A-list celebrities this year. The Washington Post reports event organizers are looking to tone down the celebrity appearances this year and focus on the correspondents.

The dinner opened with a retrospective video produced by the History Channel, highlighting the 100 years of White House press coverage. And then things got a bit ... surreal.

SELINA MEYER: "What the hell are you doing?"
JOE BIDEN: "C'mon."
MEYER: "Yellow? Seriously, yellow?"
BIDEN: "Get in the car."

WHCA President Steven Thomma then handed out several journalism awards. Reporters from CNN and Politico were recognized for excellence in covering the president, while The New York Times and CBS News journalists won an award for deadline coverage. The prize for coverage of issues of national significance went to Reuters and a partnership between the Center for Public Integrity and ABC.

And in honor of their centennial, the WHCA gave a special President's Award to National Journal's White House correspondent, George Condon Jr.

And then the President himself took the stage for some comic relief, riffing on everything from his presidency to cable news to current events to his fellow politicians.

"House Republicans actually give John Boehner a harder time then they give me. Which means orange really is the new black."

Joel McHale, of "The Soup" and "Community" fame, followed the president as the evening's entertainment, and got in a few good jabs at the President's botched healthcare.gov rollout.

"Look, I don't even have an analogy because the website is now what other people use to describe other bad things. ... 'Boy, that latest Johnny Depp movie Healthcare.gov'd at the box office.'"

Proceeds from this year's event went to the WHCA's scholarship fund for journalism students.

This is what barack hussein does. He enjoys pretending to be Queen Elizabeth in her rich kingdom, all the while he refuses to address presidential issues. Why? Because he is not a president and we have been with out a president since 2008! The middle class has been shot right in the ass and it sucks as we have no place to go but down. barack hussein has seen to that!

Americans are living in poverty, children got to bed hungry, homes are taken from the poor and elderly, soldiers are still dying in Afganistan, returning soldiers are unemployed and suffering from PTSD, and politicians are committing any number of illegal acts. Let's all have a good laugh.

Someone needs to tell Obama he can tell a joke NOT be a joke.
But then, it's too late for that advice..

He uses this platform to attack a private citizen, in fact several, when he is scared to death of real threats. The Gutless Jerk-in-Chief. Sad, pathetic and rather stupid.

A lot of wailing and gnashing of teeth and nasty complaints that the jokes were, what shall we say, nasty.

As one B.K. would say, is it wrong that I am smiling?

Yes 4.5 unemployment and gas under $200 was just terrible but yes when the dems took over congress in 2006 midterms all went to hell as they crashed the economy

No, Ron. Those who need a leader because they have this lemming like compulsion to follow want a leader. The rest of us want a President who perform a President's job well. We're quite satisfied

I thought Michelle Obama looked great. That's about all that I can say. A sad part of all of it was the focus on black jokes, Negro jokes, so much so that you had to feel embarrassed for President and Mrs. Obama. You got the impression that President Obama is more about being a Black President than the President of the USA. Some of the jokes were way below the belt and disgusting, like the one about George Clooney. I only watched rerun parts of this, but like the Academy Awards, what was the point of it?
