The 'Wonut': Chicago's New Foodie Craze

For all you creative foodies out there, get ready to eat your heart out with the newly invented pastry called the Wonut. That's right, a waffle and a doughnut combined.

Alex Hernandez, the owner of Waffles Cafe in Chicago, invented the waffle-plus-doughnut combination and started serving it two months ago.

The Chicago Tribune reports the Wonut craze went viral after Thrillest.com and BuzzFeed praised the treat. Since then, people around the world have been clamoring for a Wonut.

The Wonut follows a few other recent waffle trends that have been successful.

From ABC's "The Chew":

"Wafflegato ... Ice Cream shaped like a waffle with fused espresso."

"Waffle Tacos ... A warm waffle filled with scrambled eggs topped with cheese."

You might also be reminded of Dominique Ansel's Cronut, which was a croissant and doughnut mixture introduced in New York last summer.

But Hernandez told WMAQ the two are completely different. "They really only resemble each other because of the name combination."

So other than the similar name, the biggest difference seems to be the price tag. A Wonut will cost you $2.95, while Cronuts costs $5 apiece.

Hernandez is even sharing his secrets to make the yummy pastry. Thrillist.com takes interested bakers through the entire process from pouring the batter to forming the Wonut.

People are not playing around about getting their Wonuts. Hernandez said one man came all the way from Tennessee and offered him an extra $100 just to put another batch in. Moral of the story: get them while you can.
