3 NYPD Cops Arrested In Separate Drunken Shootings

Cops, cars, booze and bullets - put them all together and you get a recipe for disaster. It's a lesson the New York Police Department learned this week after three off-duty NYPD officers were linked to separate shooting incidents, each involving some drunk driving.

The bloodiest incident took place Tuesday night, when Officer Brendan Cronin allegedly fired thirteen rounds from behind the wheel of his car into a vehicle in front of him, hitting the 47-year-old driver six times.

The victim is currently in stable condition. Cronin refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene, but one source told WCBS he was so drunk, he couldn't even remember the shooting. He was charged with assault.

Another shooting incident, thankfully with no injuries this time, took place early Saturday when NYPD Sgt. Wanda Anthony apparently fired one shot into a parked car at a New Jersey home. The New York Post reports Anthony got into a fight with her date and his wife at the home.

Anthony was pulled over for drunk driving shortly afterward. NJ.com reports she's been suspended from the force for 30 days, and is also charged with assault along with possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.

And rounding the week off for the boys in blue is Detective Jay Poggi, who is accused of accidentally shooting his partner Matt Sullivan in the wrist while showing off his firearm in a police cruiser last Thursday. The New York Daily News says Poggi registered .11 on a blood alcohol test, well over New York's .08 driving limit.

So, yeah. Kind of an unsettling pattern. NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton acknowledged the NYPD might have a drinking problem in a press conference

"I personally am very disturbed about the number of incidents in recent weeks that are part of a longer-term problem of inappropriate use of alcohol," according to WABC.

By the way, all this happened the week after three different officers were arrested for drunk driving in a 27-hour time span. But hey, at least there was no gunplay involved in those incidents, right?

This is news? Where have you been for the last 50 years? A thin blue line exists and has always existed, look what happened to Serpico when he tried to honestly do his job. Which group is worse, the NYPD or the DEA? Drugs or alcohol? alcohol mostly, cocaine spotty, heroin, sometimes.

They're a disgrace to all of the good cops! I'm glad my father didn't act like this when he was on the NYPD in the 60's.

What is even scarier is that the good, dedicated, non-drunk, non-abusive officers have to go in and arrest the drunk, out-of-control abusive ones. Just let that thought play out in your mind.

This is heartbreaking as it sullies the name of the dedicated officers.

A drinking problem? Sounds like they have a gun safety problem to me! Let's see... The public has no business with guns, just the cops. We can trust the cops. What a joke!

Same old story over and over. Cops -- the profession attracts men who are hell raisers, controllers, and a bunch of narcissistic , sadistic people. I just don't see why cant they weed out people like this and have normal educated people with common sense and self control? Raise their salaries to one that will encourage educated , normal men to want to do this job. There are a lot of good cops, but the fact is that the varmin who are NOT good are attracted to this profession and slip through the screening somehow. Watch-- the smart alecky, loud mouthed, think they are God elements in law enforcement ruin more lives than they save and give the team a bad image.

There's plenty of comments about the contents of this article so I'll make a comment about the writer of this article. You suck as you appear to find something funny about all this.
"But hey, at least there was no gunplay involved in those incidents, right?" WTH is that? You sound like some goofy teenager writing for a high school newspaper.

Call it what you want, it doesn't belong in this article. It's unprofessional.

Drunk Cops shooting people and can't even remember it... and all NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton has to say is " the NYPD might have a drinking problem". Well Gee Wiz isn't that special. I think that NY should leave the legal citizen's Second Amendment rights alone allowing the law abiding public to at least potect themselves since this Police Force obviously won't, doesn't care, or can't. And begin to FOCUS on those who are suposed to protect and serve to INSURE they are able to do that task....without being drunk and shooting up citizens or being too "stiff" to respond or notice a crime when it's happening.
