Police: Simon made 911 call that led to arrests

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) -- Paul Simon made the 911 call that led to the arrests last week of him and his wife, singer Edie Brickell, on disorderly conduct charges, according to a police report.

The police report indicates that Brickell, 48, and Simon, 72, became physical with each other Saturday during an argument inside a cottage on their New Canaan property that houses a recording studio.

Brickell told officers she confronted her husband after he did something to "break her heart," according to police, but she did not provide any details. She told police he shoved her during the argument, and she slapped him.

The report indicates Simon called 911 and then hung up, prompting the police response.

Simon suffered a superficial cut to his ear, and Brickell, who smelled of alcohol, had a bruise on her wrist, according to the police report, first obtained by the Hour of Norwalk on Tuesday.

Message seeking comment were left Thursday with attorney Allan Cramer, who is representing the couple in the case.

Brickell told police the two had other physical confrontations and asked an officer to feel a lump on her head. But she would not let police photograph her injuries and declined to elaborate on the other confrontations.

The couple were allowed to remain on the property, but Simon agreed to spend the night in a second home in Manhattan, police said.

Both said in court Monday they did not consider the other a threat, and no protective order was issued. They are due back in court on May 16.

"Both of us are fine together," Simon told Superior Court Judge William Wenzel. "We had an argument and it's atypical of us and neither one of us has any fear or any reason to feel threatened."

"He's no threat to me at all," Brickell added.

A duet by the pair "Like To Get To Know You" was posted on Brickell's website on Wednesday.

The lyrics are about a couple having problems but ends with the hopeful line, "I'd like to get to know you, again."

Simon and Brickell were married in 1992. They have three children together.

Simon burst onto the national stage with his former partner Art Garfunkel in the 1960s, adding a gentle voice to the growing chorus of opposition to the Vietnam War. Brickell, meanwhile, gained fame for her songs that blend rock, folk, blues and jazz.

Simon is a 12-time Grammy winner and member of The Songwriters Hall of Fame and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - as half of the duo of Simon and Garfunkel and as a solo artist. Last month, he wrapped up a national tour with Sting. He will be honored Wednesday by the NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development and perform at the Beacon Theater as part of the ceremony.

Brickell collaborated last year with Steve Martin for the album "Love Has Come For You." The pair won a Grammy for best American Roots song in January. The two are touring and are due to perform next on May 9.

Depends on the state. I was stabbed in the foot by a drunken ex, and I was arrested. True story. Why was I arrested? Because I kicked at her(while laying on the ground) as she came at me with a knife. Got thirteen stitches, went to jail, and the judge ordered a mandatory restraining order on me, which left her living in my house and me homeless. I was told by an attorney that even if I pressed charges against that it would never hold up in court, because no jury would believe that a woman would abuse a man. The arresting officers KNEW what had happened, as it was pretty obvious, but still I went to jail, not her. Sexism is alive and well, only it's not quite what you have been trained to believe.

...kind of like when this story first broke everyone was assuming he hit her, and now that it turns out to be the other way around, it's fair fodder for comedic abuse. Guess what, women are violent too.

No! It's getting much better since Bush left office!! Repair is being done as we "speak"! Now if only the "right" would cooperate! But alas, "they" wish to keep things down and shift the blame to our current leadership! That way, if they try real hard, they can say that it all begain with "Obama" in 2008! But then they'd have to fool alot more people than those as easily fooled as you!

Oh PLEASE! Shut up. Obama is the absolute worst thing to happen to this country ever. Even the morons who voted for him the first time, will not admit to voting for him the second time. No one will admit to voting for him. Kinda makes one wonder who did vote for him. AND anyone who votes for that white trash Hillary, should she run in 2016, deserves what they get. Democrats will never take responsibility for the damage that they have done to our country and constitution. After Bengazhi, I don't know how Hillary sleeps at night. THERE! You wanted this to be about politics--there you go!
