Law would require changing tables in male restrooms

CA Lawmakers Push Bills Requiring Baby Changing Tables In Men's Restrooms

As the dynamics of the modern family evolve, California lawmakers are pushing two bills that require baby-changing tables in men's restrooms. Two bills mandating businesses to grant men equal access to changing tables have cleared the California State Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on Tuesday.

One of the bills proposes a changing station that is accessible to both men and women. The bill's sponsor told Fox News, "...traditional gender roles with women as the primary caregiver for the children are changing, and men are becoming more and more involved in the care of their young children. There are also a growing number of same-sex households with children."

The other bill requires changing tables in every men's and women's restroom in restaurants, movie theaters, shopping centers, and public facilities.

The proposed bills are a sign of progress, but they would force costly regulations on businesses and there is no certainty either will pass in the state senate.

I believe this is a good step forward. However, I would caution against having these new baby-changing stations installed in the "handicapped" stalls of mens rooms, as they are often times found in ladies' bathrooms today. Having a parent occupying a handicapped stall to change a diaper denies access to these stalls for the handicapped individuals for whom the stalls are intended.

If this endeavor is to move forward, I propose that the proper way would be for these new baby-changing tables to be installed in the common areas of the mens' bathrooms, presumably near the sinks and hand dryers. This would allow male parents to deal with their young children without denying access to modified toilet facilities to men who are confined to wheelchairs and scooters by their disabilities.

"Handicapped stalls" more correctly ADA Accessable, can be used by anyone, not just those in chairs or scooters.

No, but there is typically only one stall that is ADA accessible when there are often two or more stalls that are not. There is no reason to take up the only stall to which disabled people have access. The changing table is just fine attached to one of the walls.

Some thought the stalls were reserved for them when in fact it's designed for them. Use them they can wait like everyone.

There are several malls near me that already have baby changing stations in both the mens' and ladies' restrooms. Some even have what are referred to as "family rooms" - a large bathroom where a parent, male or female, could take all of the children in.

Because fathers are taking a greater child rearing role, will Courts stop automatically giving custody of the children to the mother when parents separate?

From what I hear about Calfornia, they can't afford to add new changing tables. They better work on their economy by not aubsidizing all the illegals who sneak up there.

why aren't our politicians working on ways to allow us more freedom to succeed in our struggle to make our own way and be able to pay the taxes they have already heaped upon us? Is this issue more important than addressing the state deficit problem, the lack of retirement funds, the medical problems brought about by the affordable! care act, or the mass of other problems faced by the public? Surely we can find a place to change the baby without government intervention! I hope!

I see nothing wrong with putting the tables in the men's rooms. I'm a woman and i know a few men that are single parents, and they should get everything that a woman gets.

Umm, the reason why baby changing stations are in women's restrooms is because... babies come from women! Also, isn't it child abuse for two gays to adopt male babies? And we know that two gays would never adopt female babies (fact - gays detest females).

So, once again, the ca legislature is interfering with citizens' rights by passing bad laws.

Don't these lawmakers have anything better to do? Isn't there more important issues to deal with? Let the businesses decide what they want to do. It sounds like a new way for the government to make money on fines. These lawmakers are working for the taxpayers. The taxpayers are not working for the lawmakers.
