Note found in Kurt Cobain's wallet mocks wedding vows to Courtney Love

SEATTLE (AP) -- A handwritten note police discovered in Kurt Cobain's wallet after his suicide disparages Courtney Love, the late Nirvana front man's wife.

CBS News reported that the note was taken from Cobain's wallet when police arrived at his home on April 8, 1994, after Cobain fatally shot himself. The note was never made public. CBS obtained it from the Seattle Police via a public information request.

The network reports that the undated note, apparently written by Cobain on stationery from San Francisco's Phoenix Hotel, is written like a mock wedding vow. It references Love as Cobain's "lawful shredded wife" who would be "siphoning" his money for drugs.

Cobain's body was discovered in Seattle on April 8, 1994. An investigation determined that days earlier Cobain had gone into the greenhouse of his home and taken a massive dose of heroin. He then shot himself with a 20-gauge shotgun.

Earlier this year, in advance of the 20th anniversary of Cobain's suicide, a Seattle detective reviewed the case files, including evidence photos and statements. He found no new information to change the police conclusion that Cobain took his own life.

Cobain, who was 27 when he died, sold millions of albums with Nirvana and helped popularize the Pacific Northwest's heavy, muddy "grunge" rock.

To say that his wife was the sole reason he committed suicide is a bit much. I'm sure there is a lot more in addition to that...

Some people here really are not shy to display how looney they are.

In 1997, they had the decency not to air this peevish snipe, which makes both members of the couple look small and foolish. It should have remained private.

I assume that Cobain is the "coward" in your take on what was a tragic situation. It would have been equally tragic had they not been famous. And why assume Cobain was an addict? That he took a large dose of heroin before shooting himself in the face with a shotgun could merely be an indication that he was afraid to kill himself and needed the heroin to calm him down (opiates have that effect even in non-addicts). You're also very judgmental about addicts. It is a brain disease you know.

This was a troubled soul and really, this man was so high on drugs, who knows how accurate his thoughts were. He was going through and unhappy time with his equally troubled wife. he was on drugs, she was on drugs. Neither of them were saints. And CBS should have left this alone. No one cares anymore. It doesn't bring Cobain back. It doesn't help his child any. Love I can take or leave. But the child shouldn't have to read this, even if she's now an adult.

Don't know why CBS would release that, but I have another question. Why did the police withhold that note in the first place? Was it their place to determine that? A note like that shows a possible motive for why Cobain killed himself. Unless it was common knowledge that they were having marital problems. Why should it be kept secret?

Read more carefully. Difference between withholding and not releasing to public. Why should "the" public know these things? Law enforcement knowledge, including district/city attorneys is sufficient. If the public wants such information, there are methods such as the one CBS used as part of another story.

Tomide,

That letter showed nothing more than his "feelings" at that given moment in time. Feelings are neither right nor wrong, they're not logical nor was the author of that letter. The music industry has a very dark side to it and if you're not equiped with the proper skills to navigate the dark side of that industry you will surely fall prey to it which is why I would assume Mr. Cobain was a consistantly heavy drug user. I'm sure he spent equal sums of money to feed his own habit.
That letter was written in private and intended for one person, not the public. CBS, in all of their gutter trenching had zero right to take something very personal and make it common knowledge. CBS has become the new "Star" magazine with their incredulous disrespect for humanity and their outlandish obtuse attitude toward the human spirit.
